Both Hamburg and Schalke come into this final fixture before the winter break having experienced disappointment last time out. Hamburg won’t have been best pleased with having their unbeaten run ended at the hands of Mainz, especially since the led the game, while Schalke were undoubtedly downbeat after managing to secure just the one point at home to Freiburg. However, with this match taking place just three days after, both have a good opportunity to send their fans off into the festive period in good spirits.

It’s no lie that Markus Gisdol’s Hamburg endured a shocking start to the new campaign, but in recent weeks they’ve looked a different side, picking up back-to-back wins and putting together an unbeaten run of four matches before losing at the weekend.

Schalke have experienced a similar pattern – they started poorly, but as things wore on they managed to get better and better, eventually going on a six match unbeaten run, before losing to Leipzig back at the start of the month.

From a betting point of view, goals are the way to go here. At odds of 5/4, ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’ is the bet to be on.

Goals have been very much commonplace for the hosts this season. Gisdol’s men have both scored and conceded with great regularity, especially in recent weeks, scoring eight goals in their last five. They’ve also conceded seven during this time, while three of those fixtures saw a combination of each team scoring and more than two goals.

When playing at Volksparkstadion, the hosts have kept just one clean sheet all season, while at least three goals have been scored on five (out of seven) occasions. Die Rothosen may have failed to score three times at home, but all three failures came against three of the divisions’ best defensive units in Bayern, Leipzig and Frankfurt. Plus, the hosts’ attacking efforts have certainly picked up of late, with them scoring in each of their last three at home and in each of their last six overall.

As for Schalke, well, the visitors haven’t exactly found themselves taking part in high-scoring encounters as much as the hosts, but this shouldn’t stop the goals from flowing in this one. Markus Weinzierl’s team have certainly waned defensively of late, conceding at least once in each of their last four league matches, conceding a total six goals in that time.

On top of struggling defensively of late, the visitors haven’t exactly been hitting the heights from an attacking point of view either. However, they face a Hamburg side who’ve found it hard to shut teams out this season and thus they could easily get back on track in an attacking sense here.

We’re talking about two more than capable attacking sides who have the opportunity to face back-lines that aren’t looking at all secure. With this in mind, it’s hard to envisage a match where both sides don’t create several goal-scoring opportunities and thus we could be looking at a high-scorer here, one where each team finds the net.
