One of Group H’s best defensive units takes on one of it’s worst on Thursday evening as an optimistic Greece play host to a struggling Estonia side at Karaiskakis Stadium. The Greeks currently sit in 2nd position in this group and are looking good for a place in the play-offs. Having said that, the job is nowhere near complete just yet and so Michael Skibbe’s men will need to continue picking up positive results. In contrast, the qualification campaign has been something of a washout as far as Estonia are concerned; Martin Reim’s side sit down in 5th place having accumulated just four points.

Defensively, Thursday’s visitors have looked weak and so the Greeks really ought to fancy this; however, for all their poor performances at the back, Estonia have actually shown a bit more going forward than people might have expected. The two bets that stand out here are ‘Both Teams to Score’ and ‘Estonia to Score Over 0.5 Goals’ at 9/4 and 13/8 respectively.

It is indeed worth noting that Greece are known as a defensively sound unit, even if they’re not considered the best going forward. They’re usually a team who’re well organised and hard to beat. Having said this, as they lead Bosnia in the race for 2nd place by just a single point, it is fair to say that this is nothing short of a must win game for the Greeks. With this in mind, along with the fact that they’re going up against a side who’re pretty much defensively inept, it’s reasonable to assume that this is the sort of match where the hosts might venture away from their usual defensive approach. Skibbe’s side are expected to get on the front foot and have a real go. Such tactics should certainly see them reap the rewards going forward against a side who’ve conceded 17 goals in six qualifying matches so far; however, it could of course leave them open to the counter.

You’d find it hard to fancy Estonia to get a result in this fixture, but it really isn’t difficult to see them getting on the score-sheet. When the pair met in the reverse fixture, Thursday’s visitors had a number of decent chances and really ought to have scored. They may not have done on that occasion, but, with their hosts preoccupied with scoring goals themselves, scoring at least once here could easily to prove to be within the Estonians capabilities. Despite receiving a battering, Estonia managed to find the net on the road against Belgian, utilising the counter, while they also had sufficient chances to do so in their away matches against both Bosnia and Cyprus.

Despite being a side who’re thought of as defensively astute, Greece do actually come into this match having conceded plenty of goals at home of late. The hosts have been breached at least once in four of their last five at home. In addition, Estonia come here having scored in four of their last five on the road overall.

Naturally, getting behind a visiting team who’ve scored in just two of their six in qualifying matches thus far won’t be everyone’s cup of tea and this is by no means a fixture to go crazy on, but, with things set up the way they are, an unusually attack-minded Greece is fancied to take to the field and so the fans in attendance at Karaiskakis Stadium could very easily witness chances (and goals) at both ends.
