Gina Mazany
Gina is a 33-year-old US athlete. She started her professional career in 2008. Before moving to the UFC, Mazany performed in regional promotions in Alaska, scoring a 4-0 record.
In 2013, Gina took part in the 18th season of The Ultimate Fighter, where she lost to Juliana Peña in the first match and left the project. In February 2017, Liz Kamrush withdrew from the fight against Sarah McMann, and Gina Mazany was offered to replace her. The athlete agreed, but in the debut, she was strangled by McMann in the 1st round.
Mazani had eight fights in the UFC: 3 won, five lost. Gina quickly dealt with mediocre opposition: Rachel Ostovich, Valerie Barney, and Yanan Wu. But Mazani lost to more skillful rivals.
Gina’s last fight took place in May 2021. Her opponent was Priscila Cachoeira. Mazani lost via choke in the 2nd round.
Gina looks unconvincing in the stalls. It is easy to translate and control on canvas. Also, the athlete can make a mistake in the stalls and surrender to a painful hold. There are also questions to the holder of Mazani, who twice flew into a knockout already in the 1st round.
Shanna Young
Shanna is a 31-year-old athlete from the USA. She started her professional career in 2015. Before moving to the UFC, Young, in addition to performing in second-rate promotions, was noted for fighting in Invicta FC. Shanna took part in a one-day tournament in the women’s league where the champion’s belt was at stake. There, she lost in the semi-finals by submission to Miranda Maverick, the reigning top athlete in the UFC.
In August 2019, Young took part in the Dana White’s Contender Series, where Sarah Alpar strangled her in the 2nd round. Not getting a contract with the strongest league in the world, Shanna returned to second-rate promotions. She made her UFC debut in February 2020; Shanna left on short notice, replacing Nikko Montano. Her opponent was Maisie Chiasson. Young lost by unanimous decision.
Young’s last fight was in October 2021. Her opponent was Stephanie Egger. Shanna lost by TKO in the 2nd round.
Shanna lacks punching technique. Her combinations are simple, so they do not threaten rivals. On the ground, Young has trouble with good jets. She makes mistakes and can get caught in a painful hold.
The physical form of the fighters
Gina is 2 cm shorter than her opponent but exceeds her arm span by 9 cm. The advantage in anthropometry will help Mazani keep her opponent at a comfortable distance. Gina, shooting back on the jab, will not let Shanna at a convenient distance for a takedown.
Prediction & Betting
The upcoming fight will likely be Shanna’s last in the UFC. She has nothing to offer her opponent except passive control in the clinch and if she can translate, in the stalls.
In the stance, Gina outperforms her rival in skills. She will smash Yang at medium to long-range, scoring points and dealing damage. Gina will have enough strength to turn her opponent back to the cage and break the distance if the fight goes into a clinch. Considering that Mazani has knockout power, I do not rule out her early victory.
