Garbine Muguruza aiming for at least the quarters
The former world number one Garbine Muguruza was off to an encouraging start in the US Open. Indeed the 27-year-old beat an in-form Vekic in two tiebreaker sets in a match that could go either way.
However, the Espanola used her experience to withstand Vekic’s fighting spirit. It was a very close match with both players showing some great tennis with lots of winners, 36-30 to be exact.
Furthermore, Muguruza had a great start to the season winning the title in Dubai. But the two-time Grand Slam winner has never advanced past the quarter-finals in the US Open. Thus she will make her best to reach that round which is the only one missing in all Grand Slams.
Muguruza Key Stats
- Muguruza served 77% in her match against Vekic
- The world number ten’s serve was broken twice in the match
- 10/12 of her service games, Muguruza won
Andrea Petkovic will need all her experience in this match
Former world number nine Andrea Petkovic is playing in her 13th US Open. The German has a 14-12 overall win/loss record. With her best result coming in 2011 when she reached the quarter-finals.
Recently, Petkovic reached her first final in six years in Hamburg. Later in August, the 33-year-old won the Cluj tournament in Romania which was her career’s seventh title.
In the first round of this year’s US Open, Petkovic brushed off Irina Begu of Romania. Notably, the German returned her opponent’s serve amazingly well. Hence Begu won just two of her first serve points out of 13 in the first set. It was tighter in the second set. However, Petkovic prevailed and won it 7-6.
Petkovic Key Stats
- Petkovic won 39% of the points behind her second serve
- In her match against Begu, Petkovic won 11/13 of the 1st return points on Begu’s serve
- The German lost 4/10 of her service games
Garbine Muguruza vs Andrea Petkovic Prediction
Petkovic won all three H2H meetings between these two players. Notably, the last time they met was in 2016 in Doha. At the present time though, Muguruza looks in better shape and is the clear favorite with the bookies.
As we saw in the stats, Petkovic lost her serve four times. While Muguruza lost hers twice in her match against Vekic. Vbet has odds of 2.00 for under 6.5 total breaks in the match. We think that is a probability taking into consideration the number of times each player lost their serve in their first match.
In the end, in women’s tennis, breaks of serves happen very often especially with two very good returners like Petkovic and Muguruza on the court.
