Freiburg and Köln, despite being separated by six points, are two teams who’re both chasing a place among the European spots in the Bundesliga right now. A win for either when they meet at Schwarzwald-Stadion will take them that bit closer.

Although Freiburg are just one place behind their opposition here, there is still six points between them and it is Köln who come into this fixture in better form. Having won two of their three matches since returning from the winter break, the visitors are unbeaten in 2017 and, considering they came out on top 3-0 in the reverse of this fixture, should be confident of going well once again.

At odds of 9/5 and 7/4, ‘Köln to Win’ and ‘Köln to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ are the two bets that catch the eye here. Although the hosts certainly aren’t the worst team in the Bundesliga, it’s fancied that Köln just have more about them right now.

Having drawn 0-0 away at Mainz on their first start of 2017, despite failing to break through, the visitors proved that they’re capable of cutting it defensively when playing on the road, before showcasing their attacking power when scoring six away to Darmstadt the time after that. Their solid form continued last time out when beating Wolfsburg 1-0 and it’s fair to say Peter Stöger’s men are in good shape at the moment.

Freiburg aren’t a side to be taken lightly, they’re a team who try to come out and play and can certainly get results in doing so. However, while such a tactic might serve them well at times, against a decent counter-attacking outfit such as Köln, they could easily struggle – after all, this was certainly the case when the two teams met earlier in the season. Last time out, against another team who like to break on the counter, Freiburg were soundly beaten (3-0) by Gladbach and aren’t likely to be full of confidence ahead of this one.

Defensively, the visitors have acquitted themselves well this season and it would be no surprise if they kept things nice and tight in this one, especially early on. If Köln can keep a lid on things from a defensive point of view, then, with the likes of Leonardo Bittencourt in the wide areas, they have the pace to be effective on the counter, while striker Anthony Modeste (15 goals already this season) has been deadly in front of goal and it would be no surprise to see the Frenchman in thick of things once again.

Peter Stöger’s side have looked good recently and can continue their run by getting the better of a Freiburg side who really struggled to contain the visitors when they last met.
