Fleetwood play host to Oldham at Highbury Stadium on New Years Eve – a match that sees two teams who’ve experienced contrasting campaigns go head-to-head.

Having failed to beat a struggling Bury side on Boxing Day, Fleetwood will undoubtedly have been disappointed. They’re were unable to secure three points and were shutout at home for the first time this season. However, from another angle, they kept a clean sheet and continued their unbeaten run. All things considered, The Trawlermen are still in good shape right now and will be presented with an excellent opportunity to regain the winning thread when hosting bottom-of-the-league Oldham on Saturday.

The hosts are without a doubt the team to be with in this fixture and, at odds of 1/1, ‘Fleetwood to Win’ is definitely a bet worth placing

On their own patch is where Uwe Rösler’s men have been at their best and, at what is almost the half-way point, they’ve lost just once at Highbury Stadium this season. They’ve also won seven of their other ten at home, scoring no less than 21 goals. Against an Oldham team who’ve really struggled to both find the net and win matches, the hosts aren’t likely to get a better opportunity to seal three points in front of their own fans for a while.

Defensively it would be a lie to call Oldham the worst team in the league, even if they are down at the bottom, and while it is often said that conceding too many goals is the main reason teams get relegated, it is has to be said that failing to score goals has the exact same end result. Quite simply, if you’re not scoring goals then it becomes almost impossible to achieve success, even in it’s simplest form. The visitors have struggled to score goals all season long – they’ve found the net on just 12 occasions this campaign – and as a result they find themselves languishing at the foot of the table.

In terms of how they’ve fared on home soil, Fleetwood are up there with the best in this division and it would be a real surprise if this record wasn’t to be bettered on Saturday. Rosler’s side are scoring plenty of goals and are unbeaten at Highbury Stadium in their last eight matches (all-competitions).

An additional bet here is ‘David Ball to Score Anytime’. The Fleetwood number 10 has been in good form this season, netting nine times in the league so far. As an integral part of the hosts attacking play, Ball constantly finds himself involved in the final third and it’s hard to envisage the talismanic forward going without chances here. Against an Oldham team who put up little fight when losing away from home on Boxing Day, Ball can enjoy another good run-out and looks a good bet to reach double figures for the season.

The bottom line for Oldham is that their failure to carry a real goal threat is costing them and it’s hard to see any valid reason as to why this will change at the weekend. Their attacking woes have seen them fail to score in 50% of their away matches this season, while they’ve only managed to keep their opponents out on two occasions on the road. In Fleetwood they face a team who’ve had little problem finding the net this campaign, especially at home, and the visitors’ losing run is strongly fancied to continue.
