Fleetwood Town v Port Vale Betting Tips: Trawlermen to push for automatic spots
Football writer Thomas Giles previews the upcoming League One match between Fleetwood Town and Port Vale.
This League One match is a vital affair at both ends of the table with Fleetwood looking to clinch automatic promotion whilst Port Vale are simply looking to survive. However, both of these sides are having to rely on others slipping up in order to achieve their goals.
Fleetwood are on a great run at the moment having won their last three on the bounce, including a great comeback from 2-1 down against Gillingham at the weekend. However, they are currently two points off automatic promotion with an inferior goal difference to Bolton, who sit in second. Realistically, Bolton need to lose against Peterborough for Fleetwood to have a chance.
The Trawlermen have been fantastic at the back all season with just 43 goals conceded in 45 matches – third-best in the league – whilst their clean sheet ratio of 42% is the best in the league. However, they have switched their style to a more attacking one recently and have thus kept just one clean sheet in their last six. Of course this change in mentality has meant that Fleetwood have been scoring more and they have averaged two goals per game in their last three matches.
However, one thing that could go against Uwe Rosler’s men going into this match is their home form. Although they managed to pick up a vital win in their last match at Highbury Stadium, before that they had taken just one point from a possible nine in their previous three matches. Additionally, they have scored just one goal in their last three matches on home soil, including in that recent victory against Millwall.
Port Vale managed to keep their survival hopes alive on Tuesday night after a Chris Eagles’ stunner gave them a 1-0 victory away at Walsall. Vale are relying on Gillingham to slip up at Northampton on Sunday to give themselves any hope, however, with just one point the difference between the two sides, Port Vale have a great chance of staying up.
Michael Brown’s side’s goal against Walsall on Tuesday was their first goal in five matches. With this in mind, it is no surprise that they have averaged just one goal per game this season and, of the four teams still mathematically involved in the League One relegation battle, Vale have scored the fewest goals. Defensively, Brown’s men have been poor in recent times and their clean sheet against Walsall on Tuesday was their first in five games. Furthermore, their overall Goals Against record of 70 in 45 matches is pretty appalling, albeit better than relegation rivals Gillingham and Bury.
The Valiants’ win at Walsall was their first on the road in the league since 9th October 2016. This pushed their overall away points tally from a terrible nine to a pathetic 12. Although they took all three points against Walsall, it is worth noting that the Saddlers had nothing to play for whereas Fleetwood have it all to play for on Sunday.
Unfortunately for Vale, I think they will be sent down on Saturday as I cannot see them getting anything against a Fleetwood side who are aiming for automatic promotion. The Trawlermen may not have scored too many over the course of the season, however, given their new attacking focus, I expect them to find the back of the net a couple of times on home soil this Sunday. ‘Fleetwood Town to Win & Over 1.5 Goals’ is the bet to get stuck into.
