Despite their current mid-table positions, these two teams should be finishing towards the higher end of the table this season but will do it in a rather conservative fashion. Both sides tend to grind out results rather than doing it in flamboyant style.

Rostov epitomise the conservative tactics that we often see in the Russian Premier League and it worked wonders for them last season as they very nearly claimed a famous title under the stewardship or Kurban Berdyev.

However, Rostov have lost their trademark in recent times and have not kept a clean sheet in any competition for over a month. They failed to hold on to a valuable draw away at Krasnodar last weekend and conceded a penalty in the last minute which the league’s top goalscorer, Fedor Smolov, dispatched.

Manager Ivan Daniliants, although still not technically in charge of the team, has clearly lost some of his side’s defensive stability as bigger clubs both in Russia and Europe have recruited Rostov’s defenders after watching them do so well last season. This of course means Rostov’s defence has gone into decline.

In one of the more bizarre episodes of Russian football, Rostov were knocked out by the now second division team Dinamo Moscow 4-0. The result, although surprising, was not the strangest thing to happen on Wednesday. The match was played in Moscow and kicked off at 14:00 local time – how the organisers of the cup fixture list can justify that I do not know.

Although this heavy defeat in the capital was clearly a bad result for Rostov, it should not be taken too seriously as, like most top flight clubs, they fielded a weakened team which never really stood a chance.

Despite the fact they have suffered a few poor results over recent weeks, they will be confident of picking up a result at home against the equally conservative Lokomotiv Moscow.

Railwaymen legend Yuri Semin has returned to manage Lokomotiv Moscow and things got off to a good start with an impressive win over Krasnodar. However, since then things have gone a bit awry and they have suffered two league defeats on the bounce and failed to find the back of the net in either of those matches.

It is a different story in the cup though and they managed to record an impressive 3-0 victory away at FC Khimki  despite fielding a weakened team. Despite this, it must be said that Khimki are towards the bottom of the FNL, plus, it was hardly a gruelling away trip for Lokomotiv (unlike many of their top flight counterparts) as their opponents were based just outside of Moscow.

Semin’s team lacks any real strike force – hence why they have only scored five goals this season – although defensively they are always likely to be pretty sound with the likes of Vedran Corluka and Vitaly Denisov in the side.

With all of the above in mind, in terms of both Rostov and Lokomotiv, we can certainly expect a very tight and conservative game with few chances.

I imagine the first half will certainly be a dull affair as neither side will want to give anything away. Both teams know that if they concede first then it will be very difficult to get anything from the match. Therefore I have gone with a half-time score prediction of 0-0.

Although the bookies rate both teams’ chances pretty evenly, I expect Rostov to come out on top in the end. Being at home they should be able to shut out the weak Lokomotiv attack and take any chance that comes their way. A straight win for Danliants’ side is definitely worth a bet here.

None of Rostov’s four league matches have had over 3.5 goals whilst you have to look back five games to see a Lokomotiv match last involved such an outcome. Given the likelihood that this match will be incredibly low-scoring, I would certainly look at a way to involve the ‘Under 3.5 Goals’ market. The best way to do this is to combine it with a home win which gives overall odds of 21/10.
