Beyond Schalke 04 who should finish top, Group I is actually quite tight in the race for that second spot. Krasnodar own it at the moment but are just three points ahead of rivals Red Bull Salzburg and Nice. The result of this match between Krasnodar and Salzburg is likely to have a large impact on the outcome of the group.

Krasnodar have had a very mixed record of late with just two wins in their last five matches. However, it is mainly their away form that lets them down with no win on the road since a cup victory against lower league Spartak Nal’chik back in September.

Fortunately for them, their record at the Krasnodar Stadium is pretty decent, dropping points just twice at home in the league this season. All of this puts them fifth in the Russian Premier League, just one point off their target of the European spots. If they sort their away record out then they could be a real force.

The Bulls’ main aim over the next few years is to become an established club in European football, however, their two recent losses to Schalke 04 show that they are still some way off that target.

However, with their home form generally impressive, they will be confident going into this match against bottom club Red Bull Salzburg (who they beat convincingly on match-day one). Igor Shalimov’s men know that a victory against their Austrian opponents will more or less guarantee passage into the knockout rounds, with fellow rivals Nice likely to lose in Gelsenkirchen in their match against Schalke.

After losing to Krasnodar in the first round of fixtures, Red Bull Salzburg have actually done surprisingly well considering they are undoubtedly the worst team in the group. Although they have lost three out of their four matches, that win in the last round against OCG Nice means that they are still within touching distance of the qualification places.

Oscar Garcia’s men are currently third in the Austrian Bundesliga and just two points off top spot with a pretty good record in recent weeks which reads three wins out of five. However, this optimism fades in the Europa League with the Austrian side needing victories against probably both Krasnodar and Schalke 04, the two best teams in Group G, to have a chance of qualifying – highly unlikely.

This of course shows the contrast in quality from the Austrian league to European football – even this lower format of the Europa League.

Whilst they did win their last Europa League match against Nice away from home in impressive fashion, Red Bull had lost their seven Europa League matches prior to that trip to the south of France – a record stretching back to February 2015.

One of those defeats was of course at home to Krasnodar. The Russian side are generally terrible away so Red Bull should really have at least picked up a point there. There will not be many who fancy the Austrian side’s chances going away to a team with such an excellent home record. Travelling to south Russia on a Thursday night will not be fun and games for Oscar Garcia’s team.

Although Krasnodar have been a mixed bag recently, you have to back them on home turf here. Their home record is excellent and I cannot see a rather poor Red Bull side taking anything from this one. Additionally, the Bulls have their previously-injured striker Fedor Smolov back in their side. The Russian international is already back amongst the goals and scored on his return against former club Ural on Saturday which allowed him to regain his place on top of the Russian Premier League goal-scoring chart. I expect him to find the back of the net again against Salzburg on Thursday who have only kept one clean sheet in their last five away matches.

Whilst the odds on a Smolov goal are short, the bookmakers are offering a decent price on a Krasnodar win which I find incredibly surprising. Albeit small at 11/10, the opportunity to take home odds-against on this market is too good to resist.

This should be a fairly comfortable victory for Krasnodar and, with Smolov back in the side, I expect them to put Salzburg to the sword. Fortunately for punters there is a rather conservative bet which still brings home a significant profit.

‘Krasnodar to Win & Over 1.5 Goals’ at an almost-doubling 17/10 is ridiculously high. I am expecting Krasnodar to score the two goals themselves but this option allows Salzburg to sneak a goal against a Krasnodar side who aren’t always foot-perfect at the back.
