Although this match is between one of the lower and one of the higher teams of Champions League Group A, it is still an important fixture for both as Paris Saint-Germain look to claim top spot ahead of Arsenal whilst Basel are looking to secure the third place Europa League spot ahead of Ludogorets.

It is almost impossible to judge how Basel will get on in the Champions League by looking at their league form. As they are in such a weak league, it does not matter if they beat domestic opponents 4-0 every week, they will always struggle against most teams in Europe’s premier competition.

Basel’s quest for at least the Europa League spot hit a huge hurdle in match-day one as the Swiss side could only draw 1-1 at home to Group A minnows Ludogorets. This really puts the pressure on in these big games as who knows what may happen in the return leg against Ludogorets in Bulgaria.

Although Urs Fischer’s men are undoubtedly one of the weaker teams in this group, they will feel they can pick up a result at St. Jakob Park as they have lost just one of their previous eight Champions League matches at home which includes victories against the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool.

Despite being so dominant in recent years in Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain’s domestic season has been a bit of a disaster as the French champions lie in a relatively-low third place – six points behind first place Nice.

Unai Emery’s team have little problem in defence and have the best goals against record in the league with just seven conceded, however, unusually for them, they are having trouble finding the back of the net.

With goals lacking throughout the PSG side, they are unable to kill some teams off with a second or third goal – hence why they have drawn and lost a couple of league games this season.

Much like Basel, PSG put pressure on themselves for the rest of the group phase in their first match as they could only draw against top-spot rivals Arsenal, despite having numerous chances to put the game to bed – the story of PSG’s season in the league as well.

This means a possibly tough trip to Basel is a must win for PSG, otherwise they may find themselves in the dreaded second spot and unseeded for the knockout rounds.

PSG’s away record is not terrible with the Parisians picking up three points on most occasions away from Parc des Princes but it is blotted with a couple of losses this season.

Of course many people expect PSG to win simply due to their squad in comparison to Basel’s. However, I am not completely sure as St. Jakobs-Park is an incredibly difficult place to go – particularly when you are a bit off-colour like PSG at the moment.

The visitors could be somewhat nervy at the start of this match and the main concern for both will be keeping things tight. Basel can realistically battle to a half time draw against their much wealthier opponents – a bet that is worth being on at 7/5.

Again, many people are simply expecting a PSG thrashing but, with their lack of ability to score the second and third goals in matches, I am not so sure they will accomplish this on Tuesday. Add Basel’s Champions League home form into this and an ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ bet looks a good shout.

Even if PSG do win this match, it will be very tight and I am just not convinced there will be a glut of goals. The great thing about this bet is that it allows flexibility in the result. A 2-0 PSG win, which I am sure many people think is likely, will see a profitable return on this bet.
