Monday night’s Premier League showdown is a Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool – a fixture that has produced some classics over the years.

Everton had been on a torrid run in recent weeks with no wins in their last five Premier League matches, however, they rectified that last Tuesday with an impressive 2-1 victory over Arsenal – despite going 1-0 down after 20 minutes.

The Toffees currently sit eighth in the league, but are four points off Manchester United in sixth place. Ronald Koeman’s men have been pretty reliable in the striking department in recent weeks, scoring in all but one of their last five matches. Unfortunately, despite a good defence on paper, the back-line has been sloppy and they have conceded a number of soft goals. Having said that, Everton’s defence looked like they were back to their best on Tuesday night as they kept Arsenal at bay and held on to victory.

The team from the blue half of Merseyside actually have a good record at home and, although they have won just twice in their last five attempts at Goodison Park, The Toffees are undefeated at home in the Premier League since March.

After many people were really starting to believe Liverpool had a good chance of winning the title, The Reds have slipped off in recent weeks. First they lost in dramatic circumstances to AFC Bournemouth before only managing a 2-2 draw at home to struggling West Ham United. However, they looked back on track in midweek with a 3-0 thumping of Middlesbrough at The Riverside.

Goals are undoubtedly Liverpool’s forte and manager Jurgen Klopp has got them playing scintillating, attacking football. With this open style however comes vulnerability at the back, as shown by Liverpool’s goals against record which reads 20 in 16 games – the joint second worst in the top half. Their clean sheet against Middlesbrough on Wednesday night was only their fourth in the Premier League this season – not the sort of form you need when gunning for the title.

Although they did indeed beat Boro on their travels the other night, Liverpool’s away record is not fantastic and, whilst they win most of their matches on the road, they have dropped points on four occasions which puts them below all three of their title contenders (Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal) in the ‘Away Form Table’.

Of course for these sorts of matches it is worth considering the head-to-head to look and it is worth noting that Everton have not won a home Merseyside derby since October 2010 whilst Jurgen Klopp has a 100% winning record against Everton as Liverpool manager with his side thrashing The Toffees 4-0 at Anfield in April.

Realistically, that form pretty much goes out the window for derby matches, but you cannot overlook history and, despite Everton’s decent home record, Liverpool simply look the stronger side. Additionally, with matches involving either Liverpool or Everton containing a high number of goals this season, the bet to go for is ‘Liverpool to Win & Over 2.5 Goals’ at 7/4.

If you are afraid to predict the result of a derby, for which I do not blame you, then I would certainly look at ‘Over 2.5 Goals Total, Over 10 Corners & Over 3 Cards’ at 2/1. As mentioned earlier, goals shouldn’t be too hard to come by in this fixture, while it’s easy to envisage both side taking their fair share of corners. As for cards, well, historically, this match has been known to get somewhat feisty and more than three cards looks a cert.
