Two old adversaries go head-to-head at Under-21 level on Tuesday evening as England meet Germany in the semi-finals of this summer’s Euros in Poland. Having topped group A courtesy of a commanding win on match-day three, the English should be coming into this fixture in buoyant mood while Germany, having lost their final group match, will be hoping to bounce back.

During the groups, this pair both showed themselves to be useful outfits and so there’s plenty of reason to think that each can cause the other problems. The Germans in particular appeared to be a bit top-heavy with the majority of their quality being in the final third, while both sides look as though they could easily be hurt defensively if coming up against a strong forward-line. With this in mind, an attacking encounter is expected and thus the two bets that stand out are ‘Both Teams to Score’ and ‘Over 2.5 Goals’.

Germany may well have conceded just the one goal at this tournament but punters shouldn’t be fooled by this. Clean sheets against both Czech Republic and Denmark were simply down to the fact that both of those sides left their shooting boots at home – both missed a number of promising chances. At the other end of affairs, it’s fair to say that the Germans are a force to be reckoned with. They made light work of scoring five goals in their first two fixtures and will certainly fancy their chances of adding further goals here.

Similarly, England, who’ve also conceded just one the goal, might appear to be pretty solid at the back, but, against a strong attacking outfit they’re expected to concede. Against both Sweden and Poland, the young lions were slightly fortunate to shut their opponents out while they did of course see their defence breached against Slovakia. With Germany likely to come on strong, it’s hard to see Aidy Boothroyd’s men keeping a clean sheet in this one, but they really ought to fancy their chances of inflicting some damage at the other end of the pitch. Having seen how shaky the Germans can be defensively, England are also likely to get forward and take advantage.

Having failed to score first time up, England certainly managed to up their attacking efforts in their last two matches and, having scored five goals as a result, they aren’t likely to slow down now. At the same time, Germany have also played their best football when on the front foot and, as they certainly can’t rely on a weak-looking back-line, should also get forward at every opportunity. On this basis, ‘Both Teams to Score’ looks nailed on ahead of this one.

When push comes to shove, both are fancied to crack defensively, couple this with the attacking talent and more importantly the pace that this pair have on offer, especially in the attacking third, and it’s very hard to imagine a low-scoring affair unfolding in Tychy and so ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ is a secondary bet that’s hard to avoid.
