The opening match of this weekend’s Scottish Premiership fixtures sees top half chasers Dundee host European hopefuls Aberdeen.

Dundee have been on a pretty abysmal run recently with three consecutive losses, putting them down in 8th place. However, they are still only four points off a top half spot with four games to go before the table splits for the final few games of the campaign.

Paul Hartley’s side have been poor in both boxes throughout the course of the season but even more so in those aforementioned last three games. They may have scored against soon-to-be champions Celtic last time out but failed to find the back of the net in the two matches prior to that. They have also been having a bad time at the back with no clean sheet in their last nine games in all competitions.

Two of those three recent defeats came on home soil for the Dark Blues which means they have now won just one of their last five matches in all competitions at Dens Park – keeping clean sheets in none of them.

Aberdeen are second in the Scottish Premiership after a run of eight wins in their last nine, including three victories on the spin in their last trio of matches. The Dons are eight points clear of Rangers in third and so look the most likely side to finish as runners-up this season.

The Dandies have been excellent in both boxes and their offensive and defensive stats – 53 goals scored and 24 conceded – are only bettered by table toppers Celtic. Defence though has been the main strength of Aberdeen recently though as they had kept three consecutive clean sheets prior to the recent international break and four in their last five matches.

Derek McInnes’ men have not played an away match in over a month and their trip away from Pittodrie ended in defeat. However, they had won their two previous away games beforehand and have the third-best away record in the division overall.

Aberdeen are the heavy favourites here and I can only see them coming out on top. Given the away side’s excellent clean sheet record in recent times as well as Dundee’s impotency going forward, backing the visiting team to win without conceding – ‘Aberdeen to Win to Nil’ – at 8/5 is the way to do it.
