Chile v Germany Betting Tips: Forwards can steal the show at Stadion Krestovskyi

19:00/Jul 02

Sports betting writer Bradley Gibbs takes a look at Sunday’s Confederations Cup final between Chile and Germany.

Having met each other once already in this competition, Chile and Germany will clash for the second time in less than two weeks when they faced off in the final on Sunday night. Before a ball was kicked in Russia this summer, this pair were among the favourites to go all the way so it’s no real surprise that they’ve made it this far.

In the betting, it is the Germans who’ve been tagged as favourites; however, given their apparent defensive weaknesses, it’s easy to disagree with this. For all their attacking brilliance, of which there’s plenty, they’ve never really looked secure at the back. Chile certainly aren’t short of attacking quality and, having seen how their opponents have defended on route to the final, will surely fancy their chances going forward. With this in mind, ‘Chile to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ catches the eye at 19/10.

The Chileans may have only scored twice in one of their four matches, but this shouldn’t put punters off backing them to find the net more than once here. Having scored twice against Cameroon, they were unlucky not to do the same against Germany having hit the bar at 1-0 up. What’s more,  the 1-1 scoreline in that game against Germany suited both parties and so any real attacking intent went out of the window after half-time. Fielding a less than full strength side against Australia probably didn’t do them any favours, although the opportunities were still there, while much of the same can be said about their semi-final against Portugal.

Furthermore, the manner in which Germany are likely to play should suit the Chileans. With their rather top-heavy set-up, Germany are unlikely to sit back. Such tactics could easily yield results at one end, as they’ve done in each game so far, but they’re likely to be left open at the back – a common theme at this tournament. Not only have Joachim Löw’s men conceded in all four of their matches so far, they’ve also conceded more than once in two of those. At one end, it’s easy to fancy this young German side to score goals; however, on what we’ve seen so far, it’s very difficult to see them shutting their opposition out.

In addition, what with both of these teams looking capable of hurting each other, ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’ looks a good bet. This might be a final, but with the Germans unlikely to rely on their back-line, we could see a rather open affair. The game might have finished 1-1 when the pair met in the groups but more goals could’ve easily gone in. What’s more, as touched on above, the 1-1 score suited both and so most of the attacking urgency disappeared long before the final whistle. With this being a final, such a problem isn’t likely to occur this time around.

Quite frankly, given what we’ve seen from them at this tournament so far, it’s hard to envisage this particular German team being involved in a low-scoring game. As the top-scorers, they’ve offered plenty going forward but simply don’t look strong enough at the back. In each of their four matches, Joachim Low’s men have both created and given away a high number of chances and this match, despite being a final, is expected to be no different.
