A struggling Cheltenham play host to a thriving Wycombe at Whaddon Road on Friday night in League Two. Both teams will be very keen to secure victory in this match, albeit for different reasons.

The hosts come into this fixture having won just once in their last five and will be desperate to improve their dismal-looking league position by pulling their heads above the water so to speak. On the other hand, Wycombe, although they could only manage a draw last time out, will be looking to continue on the up and further cement their place in the play-off places.

From a betting point of view, it’s hard not to fancy the visitors and, in truth, they look a good bet. With this in mind, it is somewhat surprising that Gareth Ainsworth’s men can be backed at odds as good as 6/4, but, nevertheless, such a price is well worth snapping up.

Wycombe may have drawn away to Plymouth on Boxing Day, but it’s important to remember that Plymouth have been one of the divisions’ best teams this season – certainly not something that can be said about Cheltenham! Conceding three goals was slightly out of character as defence has been a big part of why Wycombe have been thriving of late; however, Ainsworth’s side showed both resilience and an ability to score goals as they fought back from 3-1 down to earn a point. They might not have won the match, but such a performance, at least from an attacking point of view, is likely to have left them feeling confident ahead of this one.

Prior to that Boxing Day goal-fest, Wycombe had been in superb form, collecting maximum points from their last seven outings. The Chair Boys have kept six clean sheets in their last eight league fixtures and have been extremely hard to beat. Consider this in conjunction with the fact that Cheltenham have experienced difficulties when it comes to both scoring goals and winning matches and Wycombe really do stand out here.

Perhaps it would be slightly easier to feel optimistic about the hosts chances if they’d offered any sort of resistance at home of late, but they really haven’t. Having lost three on the bounce – conceding eight goals in the process – Cheltenham are without a league win on their own patch since the middle of October. During this time, they’ve struggled against some of the league’s, shall we say, more average-looking sides so it really is hard to hold out much hope for them against opposition who’ve been as hot as Wycombe have lately.

An additional bet here is ‘Wycombe to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ at 8/5. The fact that the visitors have made light work of scoring goals lately, coupled with the fact that Cheltenham have done little to prevent them from going in, makes this a bet that is hard to resist. Having scored no less than 12 goals in their last five on the road, Wycombe have found the net at least twice in four of their last five on the road, as well as in seven of their 12 away matches overall.

Furthermore, the hosts have conceded at least twice in each of their last three at home and it would be no surprise if this stat was stretched to four by the time Wycombe have paid them a visit.

All things considered, this Friday night match in Gloucestershire looks an excellent opportunity for Wycombe to regain that all-important winning feeling and they are certainly worth backing to do so.
