Chelsea hoping to bounce back
Back-to-back defeats at home and abroad have made it a testing week for Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea, though the misfiring Blues will hope to get back to business when they welcome Southampton to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Chelsea failed their biggest title test of the campaign last weekend when they were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City in a fixture that was much more one-sided than the final scoreline suggests.
On Wednesday evening, the Blues failed to score again when they were shot down 1-0 at Juventus on a disappointing evening in the Champions League. Tuchel’s men notched just one attempt on target in Turin just days after they had failed to test the keeper completely against Man City, and an improvement in the final third is a must if they are to beat a stubborn Southampton side.
Southampton still winless
Southampton are one of five Premier League clubs still searching for their first victory of the new campaign and after four draws in their first six assignments, the Saints are fast becoming one of the division’s draw specialists.
Their last stalemate came in a 0-0 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on September 18 and Southampton’s dogged performance that day should serve as a warning for any Chelsea players expecting an easy ride on Saturday.
Indeed, Southampton are unbeaten in three previous meetings with the Blues, though a repeat of their pulsating 3-3 draw with Chelsea when the Saints last visited Stamford Bridge a little under a year ago is unlikely given the teams’ shared problems in the attacking third.
Chelsea vs Southampton Predictions
Thomas Tuchel will be hoping to see a reaction from his players following successive defeats this week and while Chelsea are favourites to pocket the points at Southampton’s expense, a wide-margin victory shouldn’t be expected.
Southampton have conceded just four times in their last five league fixtures and the Saints shipped just one goal over two games against the Manchester giants United and City earlier in the campaign.
Chelsea aren’t the most creative team at the best of times, so they could struggle to tear holes in the well-drilled Southampton ranks. With that considered, we recommend backing under 2.5 goals to be scored for the seventh time in nine Chelsea matches this weekend.
A small stake on Chelsea to win to nil is also advised. Southampton failed to score in each of their last three league tussles and they could be kept at arm’s length again by the Blues’ notoriously stingy defence.
