Chelsea still with some work to do
Boss Thomas Tuchel and his players surely know that a 1-0 win in the first is still not safe for the tie against a team of Atletico Madrid caliber, especially that the Spanish team are having one of the best seasons in many years.
Chelsea had a very good game in the first leg which was played in Romania due to Covid restrictions. In that game, The Blues dominated with 59% possession and 593 completed passes. They had 11 goal attempts with five of them on target.
Chelsea were unbeaten in the group stages winning four matches, scoring 15 goals and conceding just two. An amazing defensive performance has seen Tuchel’s team with five consecutive clean sheets in all competitions.
Diego Simeone needs to change his tactics
Tough defense, relying on opponents’ mistakes and counter-attacking tactics has seen Atl. Madrid lead the La Liga standings for much of this season and qualified for the ⅛ finals of the UCL after finishing second in group A.
In the first leg of the match against Chelsea though Thomas Tuchel had his say and with his offensive tactics was able to dominate Diego Simeone’s team and could have easily scored more than a goal if not for Atletico’s Goalkeeper’s Jan Oblak four crucial saves.
Diego Simeone has to come out of his comfort zone and attack in this game if he wants his team to win the tie and advance to the quarter-finals. They don’t have a good scoring record in the UCL with an average of one goal per game, but Atletico certainly has the players who are capable of turning this tie to their favor.
Key Stats
- Chelsea have five clean sheets in their last five matches
- Chelsea are unbeaten in 11 matches
- Atl. Madrid have scored in two of their three UCL games this season
- Atl. Madrid have conceded seven goals in their away matches in the UCL this season
Chelsea vs Atletico Madrid Prediction
Both Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are having low-scoring games in recent weeks and they come into this game after 0-0 draws in their respective league games. If we look at their stats in those last games we can see that under 2.5 goals were produced in Chelsea’s last seven matches.
As for Atl. Madrid, in six of their last seven matches, under 2.5 goals were scored. It will be interesting to see whether Simeone will change his tactics and opt for a more offensive one in this match, but Chelsea remain very solid at the back and we can’t see them conceding too many goals.
We think it will be a close game with a narrow margin separating these teams. We will back an under 2.5 goals scored in this match.
