Benfica v Beşiktaş

This match between both Portuguese and Turkish champions might not exactly be the most glamorous tie of match-day one, but, nonetheless, it does look an intriguing match-up. Having been drawn in a group with Napoli and Dynamo Kiev, both of these sides will fancy their chances of progression and will be looking for a good start here.

From a betting point of view, it wouldn’t be too difficult to side with Benfica as the hosts, although there’s a better approach than that. Taking a different angle, backing the visitors to get on the score-sheet is the way to go.

While perhaps not the strongest at the back, Beşiktaş are no strangers to scoring goals and they have in their ranks more than enough attacking fire-power to breach this Benfica defence. The visitors have scored in four of their last five matches and in all of their away matches so far this season. What’s more is the fact that Benfica haven’t exactly been solid of late, conceding in three (the last three) of their last five games.

The hosts are likely to fancy themselves in this match and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t, although keeping a clean sheet could prove a difficult task. It’s hard to envisage Benfica sitting back and, in truth, they will surely spend plenty of time attacking. In doing so, although they may well find plenty of joy going forward, they could come unstuck at the back. With players such as Ricardo Quaresma, someone who can take full advantage of such situations, Beşiktaş won’t mind playing on the counter and are fancied to register a goal in this match.

Man City v Mönchengladbach

Manchester City might come into this game as heavy favourites, but last year’s fourth placed Bundesliga side should not be discounted and are more than capable of making this a tough opening task for Guardiola’s men.

Guardiola already seems to have had a huge effect at the Etihad and, with four wins from four, City are looking a dangerous prospect domestically; however, whether or not the Spaniard will be able to alter their fortunes in Europe remains to be seen.

Manchester City were always going to be favourites for this encounter, but it appears as though the Germans have been hugely undervalued in the betting and siding with them in that respect is certainly worth a go. Backing Gladbach to find the net, in conjunction with the game above, looks a very appealing bet.

André Schubert’s side have scored in each of their Bundesliga games so far this season, scoring three in total. They also put nine past Young Boys over two legs to reach the group stages of this competition. It’s no secret that Gladbach are an attacking side who can score goals. And they can do this both as a result of dictating play or playing on the counter. It’s likely that the latter will be the tactic tonight and, given the combination of pace and attacking flair in their side, this won’t concern the visitors one bit.

The fact that Manchester City have conceded in all four of their league matches so far this season also bodes well.

Interestingly, this is the second year running that these two teams have met each other in the groups stages and, just as they did last season, Borussia Mönchengladbach are fancied to find their way past the Manchester City back-line.
