Thursday’s Europa League semi-final sees Spanish side and Europa League surprise package Celta Vigo host competition favourites Manchester United.

Celta Vigo are currently sitting down in 11th in the league but have done extremely well in the Europa League, edging past the likes of Shakhtar Donetsk and Krasnodar to get this far.

The Celts have actually been quite disappointing in both boxes this campaign with just 49 goals scored and 57 conceded in 34 matches – neither of these statistics are in the top ten in La Liga. Defence has been the main problem recently with no clean sheet in their last four in all competitions whilst they have also found the back of the net just twice in that time.

Home form has been a bit dodgy for Vigo in recent weeks with three straight domestic losses at Estadio de Balaidos. However, in terms of the Europa League, they are in decent form with two consecutive wins. Having said that, they have also kept just one clean sheet in their seven home matches in Europe this season.

United’s domestic top four hopes have now all but vanished thanks to just two points taken from a possible six in their last two and so the Europa League provides the best opportunity for them to play Champions League football next season.

Jose Mourinho’s men are still struggling in front of goal with just one goal in their last two matches whilst they have also failed to score three or more in a single match in their last six in all competitions. However, they are still very solid at the back with three clean sheets in their last five whilst their overall defensive record of just 25 conceded in 34 matches is the second-best in the Premier League.

The Red Devils have done very well on their travels in the last few weeks with no defeats in their last five, including three clean sheets. However, they have failed to win either of their last two European matches, despite facing relatively weak opposition in the form of FC Rostov and Anderlecht. They have only tasted victory twice in six Europa League matches on the road so far this campaign.

Although United have not been in great form recently, particularly in Europa League away games, their sturdy defence could see them through here. Celta have struggled defensively and could be undone on the counter here. The visitors can take advantage of the host’s poor form and are worth backing to win at a decent 7/4.
