Freiburg v Wolfsburg

Prior to the season beginning, if you were told that, after nine matches, one of these teams would be sitting in 8th and the other in 16th, you would probably assume that Wolfsburg would be in the higher position. However, it is Freiburg who’ve impressed, while Wolfsburg have done nothing other than disappoint so far this season.

Having won four, drawn three and lost two, newly promoted Freiburg have enjoyed a decent campaign so far and there’s no reason why this cannot continue against a struggling Wolfsburg team on Saturday.

The bet that catches the eye, at 11/8, is ‘Freiburg to Score Over 1.5 Goals’. Fresh off the back of a 3-1 victory away at Werder Bremen, Christian Streich’s team are likely to be high on confidence – something the visitors certainly aren’t – and finding the net a couple of times here should be well within their capabilities.

Having scored seven of their 13 goals in their four home matches, the hosts have been in decent scoring form when playing in front of a home crowd this season. Two of those four (against Augsburg & Gladbach) saw Freiburg find the net at least twice. The fact that Wolfsburg have conceded at least twice in two of their four away games, including in each of their last two on the road, also bodes well.

One of the main catalysts here is the fact that Wolfsburg will come into this game and attack. The visitors are not the sort of team to sit off, especially when they’re in need of points. In doing this, they could of course yield attacking results – although they have struggled in this respect – but they’re often left open to the counter. We saw this happen when they conceded twice away at Bremen and when they conceded three away to Darmstadt. Furthermore, playing on the counter is not a tactic that’s gone unused by Freiburg – the hosts did this to good effect when beating Gladbach 3-1 at home earlier in the season, as well as when beating Bremen 3-1 away from home last weekend.

Hamburger SV v Borussia Dortmund

Where do you start with Hamburg? to put it nicely, even though the season is only nine games old, they’re in big trouble. No wins and just one draw means that they’re languishing at the foot of the table. Perhaps what’s more worrying is the fact that they’ve scored just two goals – a stat that looks even worse when you put it next to the 18 that they’ve conceded. Even though they’re at home this weekend, things aren’t likely to get much better as the free-scoring Borussia Dortmund pay them a visit.

Dortmund may not quite have hit the heights that they’re early season form suggested they would, but nevertheless the remain a real attacking force and a trip to Hamburg isn’t likely to cause Thomas Tuchel’s men too many problems.

The bet that looks a real standout here is of course a bet that favours the visitors (let’s face it, they’re hard to oppose). The way to go, at odds of 8/5, is ‘Dortmund to Score Over 2.5 Goals’.

The visitors have scored for fun at times this season and they’re unlikely to get a better chance to hand out a bit of thrashing on their travels than this fixture right here.

Having scored 20 goals so far this season, the visitors are the league’s second highest scorers behind Bayern Munich, whereas Hamburg find themselves in the unenviable position of sitting 2nd in the goals conceded table. Dortmund have scored three or more goals in four of their matches so far this season and have done so in two of their four away outings. They put five past Wolfsburg on the road, before scoring three in their 3-3 draw with Ingolstadt in their last match away from Signal Iduna Park.

Additionally, the hosts have conceded three or more goals in four of their nine league matches (two of which came at home) and have been lucky not to concede at least three in a couple of their other matches.

With the way these two are going, it’s hard to see anything other than a dominant display from the visitors and, considering the variety of attacking options in their ranks, Dortmund should easily have what it takes to cause more pain for the hosts by putting three past them.
