Bristol Rovers v Scunthorpe United Betting Tips: Visitors to come out on top

Feb 23 2017

These two sides are looking for promotion this season but it seems that away side and 2nd place Scunthorpe United are much more likely to achieve their aim rather than hosts Bristol Rovers who sit in 11th.

It was certainly ambitious from Bristol Rovers to look for a third successive promotion this season but in all likelihood it was never going to happen. They were making a good fist of it at the start of the season and it looked like it could rekindle a few weeks ago but they have now drawn too many recent games to be considered serious contenders and are six points off 6th place.

Much like their previous two campaigns, Rovers have approached this season with an attacking philosophy with which they look to outscore the opposition. Going forward, The Gas have once again been phenomenal and have scored 50 goals in just 33 league matches – the fourth-best record in the league. However, their defence has failed to adjust to the heights of the third tier and they have conceded a very alarming 54. Having said that, this looks to be improving with just two goals conceded in their last five games.

Home form has been impressive for Rovers despite the fact their Memorial Ground stadium is currently locked in a legal quagmire involving Sainsbury’s. Darrell Clarke’s men have earned an average of almost two points per game in their 17 home matches so far this season and have not lost on home turf since 4th December 2016.

Scunthorpe still find themselves 2nd in the table despite a poor run of games which has seen them take just two points from a possible 12 in their last four matches.

One of the few teams to score more than Rovers this season has been Scunthorpe who have found the back of the net 58 times. Defensively though they are much better than Clarke’s side and have conceded just 33 times in 32 league matches. Interestingly, the visitors have also kept more clean sheets than league leaders Sheffield United.

The Iron are very solid away from home and have taken 27 points away from Glanford Park in the league this season.

Scunthorpe are going very much under the radar at the moment as Sheffield United take the headlines along with in form play-off hunters Fleetwood Town. However, I expect the visitors to do a job on a rather out-of-form Bristol Rovers here and I think a price of 17/10 on the away win is well worth snapping up.
