These two teams are both going for promotion this season, Brighton & Hove Albion via the automatic promotion spots and Reading through the play-offs.

After suffering a blip of two defeats on the bounce, Brighton are seemingly back on track with no defeats in their last four, keeping them within the automatic promotion spots. However, compared to earlier in the season where they were constantly winning matches, the fact they have failed to register back-to-back wins in their last six is slightly troubling.

Defence has certainly been the Seagulls’ strong suit this season with just 26 goals conceded in 32 matches, keeping clean sheets in 50% of those matches. They did have the best defensive record in the Championship for a long while but title rivals Newcastle now hold that title. However, they have kept just one clean sheet in their last seven in all competitions.

Brighton do of course pose a threat going forward as well and have registered on the scoreboard in each of their last eight matches in all competitions.

Chris Hughton’s men have been fantastic at home and have the best home record in the division with 39 points from 16 games at the AMEX Stadium, losing just once on home soil in the league and conceding only nine goals.

After they lost three on the bounce a few weeks ago, it looked like Reading could start faltering in their promotion charge. However, they then went on a six-match unbeaten run to keep themselves inside the play-offs. Unfortunately though, their last outing saw them lose a vital match against play-off rivals Huddersfield Town, although they still sit eight points above 7th place.

Goals are the way to go in Reading matches and they are among the Championship’s top scorers with 47 scored in 33 games. However, defensively the Royals can be a bit of a shambles and only have the 13th-best defensive record in the division – and the worst of all the teams in the top seven.

Away form has also been a bit of a problem for Jaap Stam’s side with seven defeats in their 16 matches away from the Madejski Stadium and a total points haul of 23 on their travels.

This has the makings of an exciting encounter, one that boasts plenty of goals. Brighton should be capable of coming out on top to win here given their home record but, given Reading’s attacking prowess and Brighton’s recent faltering defence, Reading should be capable of finding the net. ‘Brighton to Win & Both Teams to Score’ is the bet to go for at 3/1.
