The Bundesliga season is now four matches old and neither of the teams in question here have made ideal starts. Gladbach, with their lofty ambitions having finished inside the top four last season, got things off to a promising start by beating Leverkusen on the opening day, although, with one win, one draw and one loss since, things have waned slightly. As for Ingolstadt, the Bavarian club haven’t exactly made the start they would’ve hoped for either and, with just a single point to their name, they find themselves lurking narrowly above the relegation zone.

Anyone who regularly watches Mönchengladbach, especially at home, will know that they’re an expansive side who both score and concede goals on a regular basis. High-scoring matches are often a frequent occurrence for the Rhineland team.

However, despite the hosts apparent liking for high-scoring games, the opposite is fancied in this fixture. At odds of 11/10, ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ is the way to go here.

Since their promotion to the top flight in 2014, Ingolstadt have prided themselves on their defensive solidity, they’ve become a side who’re notoriously hard to score numerous goals against and, even when they are defeated, it is generally in a tight, low-scoring affair. During the entirety of last season’s campaign, Ingolstadt saw more than two goals hit the net in just 32% of their matches and in just 24% of their away matches – by far the lowest in the division.

In addition to the above stats, less than three goals have been scored in three of the visitors four matches this season. In fact, the only time more than two match goals were scored was against Bayern Munich last weekend. Let’s face it there’s no shame in being involved in a high-scoring game against the best team in the league. Bayern will, more often than not, score numerous goals against even the toughest defences. Such form holds little value in relation to a fixture of this nature.

Unlike Ingolstadt, Gladbach aren’t usually the sort of side you want to be backing in this market, but against defensive sides such as Ingolstadt they tend to struggle. The main reason for this is that they’re largely prevented from adopting a fast counter-attacking style, a tactic that often pays great dividends for André Schubert’s men. Their match last time out against RB Leipzig is a good example to draw upon. Leipzig are also a tough team to beat and, as a side who’re willing to get men behind the ball, they keep things very compact. In doing so they frustrated Gladbach for most of the match on Wednesday night, restricting them to just a single shot on target.

Ahead of their trip to Borussia Park on Saturday afternoon, Ingolstadt are likely to be bouyed by Gladbach’s performance against Leipzig during the week and they will surely fancy their chances of having a similar effect on the hosts.

Interestingly, each of the last three matches between these two (including two last season) have seen less than three goals hit the net. In fact, a total of only two goals were scored in those three matches. A statistic that bodes well for an ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ bet ahead of this fixture.
