This Champions League quarter final could be a bit of a goal-fest as Borussia Dortmund host Monaco.

Dortmund suffered a heavy loss against Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga at the weekend which means they are now down in 4th place. However, as they nine points ahead of Freiburg in 5th, they should be playing Champions League football again next season. Dortmund decimated Benfica in their previous European match and are feared opposition.

Thomas Tuchel’s team are renowned for their goal-scoring ability and it is no surprise that they are the second-highest scorers in the Bundesliga this season with 59 goals whilst they are also the second-highest scorers in the Champions League with 25 – just one off Barcelona in top spot. However, they do have a bit of a problem at the back and, despite keeping three clean sheets in the four matches prior to that thrashing by Bayern, they only have the sixth-best defensive record in the German top flight. Furthermore, they have kept just three clean sheets in eight European matches this campaign.

Signal-Iduna Park is one of the most iconic stadiums in Europe and is frequently top of many ‘Best Stadium in Europe’ lists. BVB have of course used this to their advantage and are yet to lose a match on home soil in any competition this season. Furthermore, they have scored a magnificent 17 and conceded just two in their last five home matches in all competitions.

Monaco surprised many by knocking Manchester City out of Europe’s premier competition in the previous round, however, nobody can say that they did not deserve to do so. Domestically, they are still top of Ligue 1 with a four-point cushion thanks to a run of five straight wins.

In their match with City, we saw that the Red and Whites focus only on attack and simply look to outscore the opposition. They are by far and away the French league’s top scorers this season with their record of 88 being 23 goals ahead of Lyon in second. Furthermore, they have found the back of the net in every match in all competitions since 7th December 2016. This attacking style of course means that defence becomes a secondary issue. Monaco only have the fourth-best defensive record in France and have conceded six in their last three in all competitions.

Away form has not been too troublesome for Leonardo Jardim’s men, as demonstrated by the fact they have the best away record in Ligue 1. However, the Champions League has been a different kettle of fish as Monaco have lost their last two European away matches and have not won in three. Furthermore, they are without an away clean sheet in the Champions League since November 2014.

Although Monaco are dangerous, I think Dortmund should come out on top here given their firepower, particularly against a Monaco side whose defence is poor on the road. Both teams could easily score in a home victory, however, I think the most sensible option is ‘Dortmund to Win & Over 2.5 Goals’ at a nice 6/5. At least three match goals were scored in four of the last five Dortmund home matches, as well as four of the last five Monaco away games.
