This tie between these two European giants is arguably the most intriguing of all the Champions Leauge quarter-finals and is incredibly difficult to call.

Bayern recovered from a 1-0 loss to Hoffenheim a week or so ago to beat Borussia Dortmund by a convincing 4-1 score-line to ensure they are still well clear at the top of the Bundesliga with a ten-point cushion.

Unsurprisingly, Carlo Ancelotti’s men are top of the charts in both the attacking and defensive statistics in Germany with 71 goals scored and just 15 conceded in 28 games. However, there is a bit of bad news going into this match with Real as they have not kept a clean sheet in their previous two whilst they  could also have some key players missing such as Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski. Essentially the spine of the team.

Die Roten have been magnificent at home this season and have so far not lost a match at the Allianz Arena in any competition. They are certainly hitting their stride on home soil at the moment with seven consecutive wins in all competitions, scoring an incredible 30 and conceding just twice. Additionally, they have won their last 16 Champions League matches at home, however, their last loss at home in Europe’s top competition came against Real Madrid back in 2014.

Like Bayern in Germany, Real are also top of their domestic league and have a three point cushion with a game in hand following a run of no defeats in eight La Liga matches. They reached this stage of the Champions League after disposing of Italian side Napoli by a 6-2 aggregate scoreline whilst it is also worth remembering that they have won two of the last three Champions League titles so are clearly a formidable force.

There is no doubting Real’s attacking quality and it almost goes without saying that they have one of the best goal-scoring records in La Liga with an average of 2.6 per game whilst they have also scored in every game in all competitions this season. However, defensively there are a few doubts and they have not kept a clean sheet in their last two matches. Furthermore, they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in the Champions League this season.

Zinedine Zidane’s side have been brilliant on the road recently with five wins on the spin. However, they have been pretty poor at the back on their travels and have not kept a clean sheet in a competitive match in any competition (not including FIFA Club World Cup) away from the Bernabeu since 19th November 2016. Furthermore, until recently, they did not have a great away record in Europe and, prior to the last two matches, they had not won in four.

When two forces come together in a fixture like this, something has to give, but this might not be the case early on. Bayern have a lot of players missing whilst Real are not great on their travels in the Champions League. The opening stages of the first-leg could well be somewhat cagey with both sides feeling each other out. ‘Half Time Draw’, at 7/5, is the bet that appeals most.
