Even as early as four matches in, people would have expected a top-of-the-table clash to involve Bayern and Dortmund, but, no. It is in fact Hertha Berlin who face Munich as we see one and two in the table go head-to-head at the Allianz Arena.

As both the hosts and one of the powerhouses of European football, Bayern come into this match as long odds-on favourites and, realistically, you can’t argue with that. However, Hertha Berlin, having performed with plenty of credit throughout the entirety of last season, have made an excellent start to the new campaign and this might not be as simple for the home side as many would assume.

The Bavarian side might sit top of the table, with three wins from their three matches, but it is only goal difference that separates themselves and the team from the capital. Hertha have, so far, matched Bayern stride for stride, recording three wins from their three games and, impressively, have conceded just one goal in doing so.

The visitors have scored in all three of their fixtures so far this season, scoring no less than two on each occasion. And, even against the might of Bayern Munich, they are fancied to continue this trend today. At odds of 7/5 ‘Hertha Berlin to Score Over 0.5 Goals’ is a decent bet to be on in this match.

Much like the visitors, Munich have only conceded a single goal so far this season, but they haven’t really been tested. Until Saturday’s game against Ingolstadt the hosts had conceded just four shots on target in 180 minutes of football. Ingolstadt almost matched that in the first half on Saturday and proved that, if you’re willing to counter and commit players forward when the opportunity presents itself, this Bayern back-line might not be quite as unbreakable as it may seem. Saturday’s visitors might have scored just one goal, but with better finishing they could’ve easily have had two or three. The mere fact that Ingolstadt created those chances is a positive sign for Hertha ahead of this one. The team from Berlin won’t mind biding their time – after all they are no stranger to keeping things tight and playing on the counter – and they have the ammunition to inflict some serious damage should the chance arise.

Another bet worth going for in this fixture is ‘Both Teams to Score’ at 13/8. As mentioned above, there’s plenty of reason to think that Hertha can get themselves on the score-sheet in this fixture and, at the same time, it’s hard not to see Bayern doing the same. The hosts have scored in each of their matches so far this season, while at no point last season did they fail to score in front of their own fans. You’d have to go back as far as the 9th May 2015 to see a scoreline where Munich didn’t register a goal at home and that was in a match that meant nothing since they’d already secured the title. Basically, Munich don’t really do not scoring at home and, with the embarrassment of attacking talent in their ranks, it’s easy to see why.

Fans and punters alike might be expecting a routine Munich win on Wednesday night and they may well see one; however, regardless of the final result, Hertha are fancied to cause the hosts some damage, even if it does turn out to be superficial in relation to the overall outcome.
