This match sees two giants of European football take each other on in the early stages of the Champions League knockout rounds as Bayern Munich host Arsenal in this first leg.

Bayern paid a heavy price for losing to Russian minnows FC Rostov in the group stage as it meant the German giants finished second in Group D and drew a fierce competitor in Arsenal. Domestically, things have dramatically improved in the last few weeks after a poor start and the champions are now once again sitting on top of the Bundesliga after a  run of no defeats in nine matches.

Unsurprisingly, Carlo Ancelotti’s men are top of the charts for both defence and offence with 45 goals scored and just 12 conceded in 20 league games. However, the Champions League has been a different story, particularly at the back where the German champions had an average ‘Goals Against’ record of one per game.

The most standout statistic regarding Bayern is their home form which is currently the second-best in the league with 24 points taken from 10 matches (RB Leipzig have accumulated 25 from their 10 home games). Having said that, it is certainly worth pointing out that Bayern have not lost a competitive match at the Allianz Arena since March 2016 and before then they had not lost at home since May 2015.

For once it is not Arsenal’s fault that they have drawn superior opposition in the first knockout round as they came through their group relatively comfortably with 14 points. However, this does not stop the unrest happening at Arsenal right now with many calling for long-serving manager Arsene Wenger to go following two losses in their last three Premier League matches, leaving them 10 points off leaders Chelsea.

We all know the Gunners’ strength is going forward and it is no surprise that they are the league’s joint-top scorers with 54 goals in 25 matches whilst they have also got on the score sheet in their last 15 in all competitions.

Defensively though, questions always hang over Wenger’s side. 28 goals conceded and just eight clean sheets in the Premier League this season doesn’t make for not great reading. Additionally, like Bayern, they averaged a goal conceded per game in the Champions League group stages this season.

Arsenal do tend to struggle on the road in all competitions and they have lost three of their last seven matches away from the Emirates Stadium. Furthermore, they have lost four of their last seven away Champions League matches.

Bayern are heavy favourites here and should have the required quality to come out on top, but Arsenal, who also boast plenty of forward-class, can certainly compete going forward. On this basis, ‘Bayern Munich to Win & Both Teams to Score’, at 15/8, appeals as the selection to be on.
