Having won promotion to the Bundesliga after a pleasing season in Germany’s second tier last season, things could hardly have gone better for Leipzig this time around. After ten matches they are unbeaten and currently sit 2nd in the table, behind league leaders Bayern on goal difference only.

As for Friday’s hosts, well, it’s been a bit of an up and down campaign for Leverkusen so far. After finishing third last season, Roger Schmidt’s team would’ve been looking to kick-on; however, things haven’t yet gone to plan and the visit of Leipzig ensures that things aren’t likely to get any easier on match-day 11.

Despite not making the best start to the campaign, Leverkusen have won their last three in all competitions, although none of those wins have been carried out in convincing fashion and they could struggle against a bang-in-form Leipzig side. With this in mind, at odds of 6/5, ‘Leipzig Draw No Bet’ is the bet to be on ahead of this fixture.

As mentioned above, Leipzig are yet to taste defeat since earning the right to compete in the Bundesliga and this has been no fluke. The Saxony side have combined defensive solidity, with fast counter-attacking play and have been good value for each of their wins and, in truth, are yet to look under pressure in a match. With three wins and two draws, scoring ten and conceding just three, the visitors boast the league’s best away record at this stage in the campaign.

Leverkusen might face a bit of a dilemma ahead of this one. Do they approach this match in their usual attacking style and risk getting cut open on the counter? or do they play more cautiously and sit deeper? Either way is likely to suit Leipzig as they’ve shown themselves to be both ruthless on the counter and comfortable in possession. In truth, it’s hard to see Leverkusen not trying to play the game on the front foot, after all they’re generally an attacking team at home and most of their success has been achieved as a result of playing in this way. However, as several teams have already found out, this is a dangerous tactic to employ against a very astute and well-drilled Leipzig outfit.

Realistically, it’s hard to see Leipzig cracking in this fixture and their unbeaten run is fancied to continue. Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side are solid at the back and will be happy to soak up any pressure, before bursting into life on the counter. With players such as Timo Werner, Emil Forsberg and young Scottish recruit Oliver Burke, the visitors have both pace and width in abundance in the forward areas and will undoubtedly cause Leverkusen problems.

All things considered, it’s hard to find too many faults in the way Leipzig have gone about their business so far this season and a combination of their superior defensive play and counter-attacking style should see them continue their unbeaten run, while it would be no surprise if they left the BayArena with all three points on Friday night.
