Long-time league leaders RB Leipzig fell off their perch at the top of the tree not so long ago, but having since returned to form with two good wins, the Bundesliga new-boys will be keen to keep the pressure on Bayern when they travel to face Augsburg on Friday night.

With 21 points separating these two in the table, it would be easy to assume that RB Leipzig will come out on top here, but Augsburg are probably a bit better than their league position suggests and are more than capable of going well in this fixture.

From a betting point of view, the selection that stands out is ‘Both Teams to Score’. In recent weeks, both Augsburg and Leipzig have shown plenty going forward, but, at the same time, they’ve both been decidedly suspect at the back.

Augsburg might not have the most attractive-looking home record so far this season and they’re in fact the Bundesliga’s lowest scorers on their own patch; however, they’ve only failed to score in three of their 11 fixtures at the Augsburg Arena and come into this game having found the net at least once in four of their last five league matches, notching no less than eight goals.

Defending has been something of a problem for Manuel Baum’s side this season, especially in front of a home crowd. Augsburg have conceded 17 goals on home soil and have kept just three clean sheets, conceding at least once in four of their last five at home. Consider this in conjunction with the fact that Leipzig come into this match having scored five goals in their last two league matches and it’s easy envisage the hosts being unable to hold out once again.

In recent weeks, the visitors have experienced a slight downturn in fortunes, failing to score in three of their last five on the road. Having said this, they’ve been able to bounce back in good style, scoring twice away at a rejuvenated Gladbach during their last away trip and looked well and truly back on the up when firing home three times in their latest win over Köln.

Since the home side have failed to keep their opposition out in any of their last nine in all competitions, it would be a surprise if Leipzig, who happen to be the Bundesliga’s third-highest scorers, failed to find the net in this fixture. On the other hand, given their recent defensive exploits, it would also be a bit of a shock if Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men walked away from this match with a clean sheet. The visitors have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last five (home and away) and have conceded at least once in each of their last six on the road (league matches).

It’s not all that hard to decipher that Leipzig are the stronger of these two teams – a 21 point gap can’t exactly be put down to luck – and, with players such as Timo Werner and Emil Forsberg, they do possess that little bit more in terms of quality. However, Augsburg should not be discounted and have more than enough quality (Raúl Bobadilla springs to mind) to do some damage of their own.

Given the way these two teams have been playing of late, there’s every chance that both will get on the score-sheet on Friday night and, therefore, backing ‘Both Teams to Score’ makes plenty of sense.
