Relegation scrappers Augsburg play host to European football hopefuls Köln on Saturday as two teams with plenty left to fight for go head-to-head.

In recent weeks, this pair have had a couple of things in common; firstly, they’re both struggling to defend and, secondly, they’re finding themselves involved in high-scoring matches. With both still fighting, albeit for different reasons, the goals are fancied to flow once more. With this in mind, the two bets to go for are ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’ and ‘Over 3.5 Goals’.

During the early part of the season, Augsburg were fairly hard to beat; however, over the last couple of months, any defensive solidity that was there has seemingly vanished with the hosts failing to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 14 Bundesliga matches. Conceding goals is becoming a major problem for Manuel Baum’s side. They might be scoring a few of their own but such defensive woes are really costing them.

In front of a home crowd, the goals have been arriving in droves in recent weeks, both for and against. The hosts have scored in each of their last five at home, scoring nine during this time, but have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of those, conceding a rather worrying 11. Unsurprisingly, ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ has landed in four of those five, as has ‘Over 3.5 Goals’. In fact, only one team in the entire division has seen ‘Over 3.5 Goals’ land more times on home soil than Augsburg have during this campaign.

On their travels, Köln have been in a similar position. The visitors are scoring a few goals, but are finding it very tough indeed to keep them out at the other end with both teams scoring in four of their last five on the road, as well as five of their last six. Peter Stöger’s men are not short of attacking talent – striker Anthony Modeste has notched an eye-catching 23 goals this season – but, for one reason or another, they’ve been struggling massively from a defensive point of view, especially when playing away from home. Köln are without a clean sheet in six away from home and have conceded at least twice in each of their last five. ‘Over 2.5 & Both Teams to Score’ is a bet that has won in five of their last six on the road, while ‘Over 3.5 Goals’ has landed in three of those.

Interestingly, only two of the other 17 Bundesliga teams have seen ‘Over 3.5 Goals’ land more often than Köln have when playing on their travels.

Both of this pair really do need a win here and thus we should see two teams, who favour the attacking side of the game anyway, having a real go. With their respective defensive records of late, it’s highly unlikely that either will make shutting the other out their primary objective and, therefore, goals should be on the menu.
