AS Roma vs Sampdoria: Prediction and Betting Tips

17:30, Dec 22 2021
AS Roma vs Sampdoria prediction for Wednesday’s Serie A clash at Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Fifth-placed AS Roma host 15th placed Sampdoria in round 19 of the 2021/22 Serie A season. This is an important game for both teams as they want to improve their positions on the table. You can follow our free preview prediction and betting tips on this page.

AS Roma going for a hattrick of wins

Roma registered one of their biggest wins in the last round as they beat Atalanta in Bergamo 4-1. With that win, the Giallorossi closed the gap on the top four to just six points. Moreover, Roma have now won their last two games continuing the trend of losing and winning every other two games in the last eight rounds. Now, they are favorites for a third consecutive win for the first time this season since their hattrick of wins in the campaign’s opening weeks.

The last time Roma lost a match to a team not in the top ten after leading at halftime was back in 2018. Hence, it is important for Mourinho’s team to get on the scoresheet early on. With six wins and two losses in their nine home matches, Roma are somewhat solid at the Olimpico. Moreover, apart from the disastrous display against Inter when they lost 0-3, the Giallorossi have five clean sheets in Rome.

Sampdoria to maintain their undefeated run?

Sampdoria couldn’t hang on to their lead against Venezia in the last round as the game ended with a 1-1 draw. This was the third time in the last nine matches that the Blucerchiati lost or drew after scoring first. However, picking up ten points from their last six matches has helped La Samp to climb the table and away from the danger zone.

Nonetheless, being nine points ahead of the relegation zone with still half of the season to play, Sampdoria are not safe. Therefore coach D’Aversa must make sure his team doesn’t lose points easily. Moreover, D’Aversa needs to find a solution for his defence in away matches. Indeed, in all four of their defeats on the road this season, they conceded three goals.

AS Roma vs Sampdoria Prediction

One thing is for sure, both Roma and Sampdoria have great goalscoring records in Serie A. Notably, Sampdoria scored in all of their last five matches while Roma were on the scoresheet in five of their last seven matches. Hence the probability for over 2.5 goals is 60%.

However, Roma scored three goals at the Olimpico just once this season in their opening match of the campaign. The reason for that is Mourinho’s strategy of securing defence first and then dealing with attack and we don’t expect the Portuguese to change his tactics in this game.

As for Sampdoria, their average goals scored on the road is 1.5, and they have failed to score in 25% of their away games ( 2 of 8) so far. At the other end of the field, La Samp have conceded 1.63 goals per game.

To conclude, we think Mourinho’s tactics will determine the outcome of this match. And since the Portuguese is defense-minded, we will back under 3.5 goals for this match as was the case in the last five head to heads. As for our second prediction, we think we will see goals from one side.
