These two sides are at opposite ends of the table but are so far having similarly disappointing seasons with Arsenal yet again failing to mount a title challenge and struggling to get into the top four whilst Sunderland were the first team to be condemned to relegation.

Arsenal recorded an emphatic 4-1 victory away at Stoke on Saturday, extending their winning run to three. However, after Liverpool’s win at West Ham, they are still four points off the top four with just two matches remaining.

The Gunners once again showed their attacking prowess at the Bet365 stadium as they put Stoke to the sword. They have now found the back of the net eight times in their last three matches, boosting their Goals For statistic to an impressive 72 – the fourth-highest in the league. There are of course always defensive questions hanging over Arsenal, however, that Peter Crouch goal they conceded against Stoke on Saturday was the first they had done in 247 minutes of football. Having said that, their overall defensive record of 43 conceded is the worst in the top seven and is probably why 67% of Arsenal matches have contained three or more goals this campaign.

Arsene Wenger’s men have been fantastic on home soil in the Premier League of late with no defeats in their last five, keeping four clean sheets in the process. Furthermore, they have found the back of the net in each of their last 12 matches at the Emirates as well as in 94% of them overall. Finally, they also have a better home record than both Manchester City and Liverpool who are ahead of them in the Premier League table.

Sunderland were booed off in their final Premier League home game for at least a year on Saturday as they lost 2-0 to Swansea City – a result which enabled them to survive as Hull City subsequently lost away at Crystal Palace. With two matches left, Sunderland could still finish higher than last but that is even less than a consolation on an abysmal season.

Unsurprisingly, the North East side have been woeful at both ends of the pitch, Jermain Defoe aside, with just 28 goals scored and a huge 62 conceded in 36 games. Unfortunately for Sunderland, there do not seem any positive signs going into next season either as, they have failed to score in all but two of their last 12 matches, keeping just two clean sheets in that same time period.

Considering they are bottom of the table, the Black Cats have been relatively good on their travels compared to the other teams with only the fifth-worst away record in the division – although their points tally of 10 is still atrocious. Sunderland of course won their last away match at Hull, a side who had been fantastic at home since the turn of the year. Before then though it had been thoroughly miserable with ten losses in 11 away trips. Additionally, they have the joint-worst away clean sheet record with just two kept.

You will not be surprised to hear that I am backing Arsenal here and I think they will win with ease. The bet to go for is ‘Arsenal to Win to Nil’ which can be had at a reasonable 17/20. Sunderland seriously lack confidence at the moment whilst Arsenal seem to have a bit more of a fighting spirit these days and will no doubt look to take their top four ambitions to the wire. Furthermore,  Sunderland have found the back of the net just once away at a top eight side this season and even that goal came on opening day.
