There has been a lot of history between these two sides in the previous years, particularly in the Copa America, and Chile have gained the upper hand. This includes the current World Cup qualifying campaign in which Chile are 4th and Argentina are 5th in the COMNEBOL World Cup qualification table.

However, one of these sides could quite easily miss out on Russia 2018 with the way things are going.

Chile have been one of South America’s top performers in recent years and are currently on a five-match unbeaten run in all competitions. Going into this match though, Chile’s Argentine-born coach Juan Antonio Pizzi has a few injury worries to key players with Arturo Vidal and Marcelo Diaz set to miss out whilst Alexis Sanchez is having trouble with his ankle at the moment.

Argentina are in a bit of a mess at the moment, performing pretty badly in this qualification campaign whilst they are also still refusing to speak to the media after being angered by reports that winger Ezequiel Lavezzi had been smoking marijuana.

The Argentines finally managed to win last time out against Colombia after failing to win any of their previous four. Prior to that match against Colombia, Argentina had been woeful at the back and were even lucky to keep the score down to 3-0 against Brazil back in November 2016. New coach Edgardo Bauza may have a slight problem with talisman Lionel Messi as he played for Barcelona on Sunday night before making the long, gruelling trip to Buenos Aries. Could this tiredness cost him on Thursday?

La Albiceleste are the favourites here, despite having a poor record against Chile in recent years. However, given their struggles at the moment, I am not sure it will be that easy, although, having said that, Chile have a few injury problems so it would be hard to fancy them with great confidence either.

The result-neutral bet of ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’, at 8/5, stands out. This is a must-win game for both sides as we reach the crunch stage of the qualification process and, therefore, both should be going for it and, with neither defence being particularly great, there should be goals. It is also worth noting that this bet would have won in four of the last six meetings between the two sides.
