Angers v Lyon Betting Tips: Visitors won’t have it all their own way
Sports betting writer Bradley Gibbs takes a look at Friday night’s Ligue 1 action between Angers and Lyon.
After both losing last time out, this pair will be looking to get things back on track as they face off on Friday night, but only one of them makes any appeal with the betting the way it is.
Having somewhat unluckily come up short against Ligue’s 1’s two biggest hitters in PSG and Monaco in recent weeks, Angers are finally fancied to get a decent result against one of the division’s top five. Lyon have shown in recent weeks that they’re far from infallible and, with one eye likely on the Europa League, look somewhat overpriced ahead of this one. The two bets that stand out are ‘Angers Draw No Bet’ and ‘Angers to Score Over 1.5 Goals’.
Although a league position of 14th isn’t all that flattering, Angers are certainly a capable side, especially on their own patch. Having lost just five times on home soil, Stéphane Moulin’s side have looked pretty useful at Stade Raymond Kopa. They’ve played a decent attacking game of late and have scored at least twice in each of their last four on home soil. What’s more, with pacey forward players in their ranks, they’re suited to playing on the counter against the more attack-minded teams. Such a tactic is likely to come to the fore against a Lyon side who love nothing other than to push forward.
Having notched an impressive 66 goals during this campaign, nobody can question Lyon’s attacking efforts but their defending hasn’t been up to scratch, while their performances on the road have often left plenty to be desired. Over the past month or so, Lyon’s defensive frailties have really come into focus with them struggling to keep teams out. The Europa League semi-finalists have have been extremely susceptible to the counter and have kept just one clean sheet in their last five, as well as just one in their last eight on the road. They’ve also conceded at least twice in four of those eight.
It would be no surprise if a few of Lyon’s key players were rested for this one as they will no doubt be looking ahead to their Europa League semi-final first-leg which takes place on Wednesday. With this in mind, Angers really ought to fancy their chances. The hosts will also take plenty of confidence from some of Lyon’s recent results in the league, particularly their 4-1 loss against Lorient just a few short weeks ago. A Lorient side who’re down in 16th place proved that this Lyon side can definitely be got at, especially on the counter, and Angers should be looking to follow suit.
All things considered, a visiting side who’re anything but secure at the back look to be overpriced here and the hosts are fancied to cause bit of a upset at decent odds.
