AFC Wimbledon v Rochdale Betting Tips: Goals on the cards at Kingsmeadow
Football writer Thomas Giles previews the upcoming League One match between AFC Wimbledon and Rochdale.
This match sees mid-table sitters AFC Wimbledon host Rochdale, who are looking to regain their play-off place.
Wimbledon have dropped off the pace in this latter part of the season with no real chance of them going up or down. Their run of just one win in their last five means they currently sit 13th in the table. However, given they are a newly promoted team, they have done remarkably well.
Goals have been the Dons’ main problem in the last few matches and they have failed to score in three of their last four games. Defensively, they have not been too bad with just four conceded in those aforementioned five matches, keeping two clean sheets in the process. In fact, their overall defensive record at the back has been quite good with just 48 conceded in 39 matches. Unfortunately though, their lack of bite in the final third means they have not been able to pick up more positive results recently.
The Wombles have not been great at home so far this campaign and have only taken three more points at the Fans’ Stadium than they have on their travels. In line with their general form, Wimbledon have slumped a bit at home in recent weeks with two losses in their last three. However, it is also worth mentioning that their last two victories on home soil have come with a clean sheet.
After having a drastic drop-off from mid-January to mid-March, Rochdale have recovered to go unbeaten in their last three, winning two of them. They are still outside the play-offs, where they looked comfortable until a few weeks ago, but are now just six points off with a game in hand and momentum is on their side.
If you want to see goals, you need to watch matches involving Keith Hill’s side. They are certainly a side who focus on the offensive side of their game with 61 scored overall, however, as you would expect, this leaves them rather open at the back with 55 goals against in just 38 games – the worst of any team in the top eight. Furthermore, Rochdale have found the back of the net in their last eight matches and conceded in each of their last nine.
Away form has certainly let The Dale down this campaign with just 19 points taken from 19 games on their travels – worse than Tuesday’s opponents Wimbledon. This is in comparison to the 38 that Rochdale have earned at home – 67% of total points. However, they finally got rid of their away hoodoo on Saturday with a 3-1 victory at Chesterfield following a run of just two points taken from a possible 18 in the previous six games.
Although Rochdale are the more likely to come out on top, the result-neutral option of ‘Over 2.5 Goals’, at 11/10, stands out as the best bet. Rochdale are in fine scoring form with ten in their last three games; however, with no clean sheet in their last seven, they’re not the surest at the back. With the visitors needing to go for it here, goals should be on the cards once again.
