These two sides were both targeting an assault on the play-offs this season but it looks like they are both currently doing their best to keep away from them.

How often do we see a team who just missed out on promotion last season (Goal Difference in Accrington’s case) go on to have a terrible season the next time round? Accrington are currently down in 19th and just four points clear of the bottom two. However they are undefeated in their last two and have two games in hand on those in and around them.

Stanley have been woeful in front of goal this season and their record of just 32 in 30 games is the worst in the league. Add into this a defence which concedes an average of 1.4 goals per game, keeping just five clean sheets, and you can see why they are down near the bottom of the league.

Having said all that, John Coleman’s side have been fantastic at home in the last few weeks with no defeat in their last five matches at the Crown Ground.

Cambridge looked like they were going to have a right good go at the play-offs a few months back but eight points from their last eight matches means they have slipped down to 13th. However, they are just five points off the top seven with a game in hand so the mission is certainly salvageable.

Defence had been Shaun Derry’s side strong point until recently but they’ve now failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last six matches. Despite this, their record of 37 conceded in 31 is still one of the best in the league whilst 40 goals scored is also a respectable total.

The U’s away form has been pretty dire recently and they have scored just one goal on their travels in 2016, losing twice and drawing once. Going to Stanley could be a tough ask for them with their decent home form.

Although the form book says it should be an Accrington win, I am going the other way here as I think Cambridge’s superior quality should shine through and It’s hard to see this poor Stanley front-line causing too much trouble for a Cambridge defence who can certainly mix it in this league on their day. 2/1 about an away win looks a really good price and the visitors are worth backing to make it back-to-back wins.
