The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon are another top team to look out for when the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament takes place from July 2 to July 23, 2022, in Morocco.

Per records from the history of the continent’s most prestigious Women’s football competition, Cameroon are the fourth top-rated side behind Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa in an orderly manner.

Cameroon are probably the 4th most successful country in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations after achieving four runner-ups thus 1991, 2004, 2014 and 2016 when they hosted the tournament and lost to Nigeria narrowly in the final. They have also won the bronze medal three times in the process.

With four times finishing in the 4th place, the Indomitable Lionesses have been to the last four of the tournament on 11 occasions – the second behind Nigeria who have been to the semi-finals 13 times.

Cameroon were 3rd in the last edition of the African Women’s Championship held in Ghana where they lost to Nigeria in the semi-finals via penalty shootouts and beat Mali 4-2 in the third-place playoff.

The Indomitable Lionesses have been to the FIFA World Cup on two occasions in 2015 and 2019 bowing out of both Mundial at the Round of 16 stage with defeats to China and England respectively.

They have participated in the Olympic Games just once in 2012 but weren’t able to go past the group stage after finishing bottom of a group that had hosted in Great Britain, Brazil and New Zealand.

Cameroon have set their eyes on unseating Nigeria as the African women’s champions after the tournament with Gabriel Zabo in charge as head coach.

“We are going to Morocco to win the tournament. We are not afraid of any opposition. We will see all the parameters physically, technically and mentally and ensure our readiness.” Zabo recently told the Cameroonian press.

Twenty-six players are currently in camp for preparations ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco with Ajara Nchout Njoya set to be the main woman of the team. She currently plays for the Italian side Inter Milan.

Nchout Njoya was the top scorer of the Norwegian Toppserien in 2020 after helping her club Valerenga to win the league title. She was voted runner-up in the Africa Women’s footballer of the year award in 2019.

Since Nchout Njoya cannot do it all alone for the Indomitable Lionesses, the likes of Rose Bella, Falone Meffoumetou, Genevieve Ngo Mbeleck and Raissa Feudjio are expected to rise to the occasion during the tournament next month.
