Virgil van Dijk reacts after Netherlands draw against ‘great’ Ecuador

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has revealed what he really thinks about coming up against Ecuador on Friday in the World Cup.

Virgil van Dijk has heaped praise on Ecuador although claimed that they are not ‘world-class’ on the ball after they held the Netherlands to a frustrating draw.

The Netherlands headed into the game as the favourites but encountered more than what they had bargained for after the Ecuadorians put up quite the battle to deny the Dutch side the win.

Cody Gakpo scored the opener with a beautiful strike halfway through the first half but Ecuador fought back into the game when Enner Valencia scored the equaliser shortly after the interval.

The Ecuadorians finished the game with more scoring chances than the Dutch side and many, who watched the game, agreed they outclassed the Netherlands.

Van Dijk has admitted that Ecuador played well but wasn’t convinced that they are world-class on the ball.

Speaking after the draw, the Liverpool centre-back said: “We faced a great team. They put very good pressure, they are not world-class on the ball but they are aggressive and sharp.”

The Netherlands will face Qatar next week and a win over the World Cup hosts will see them finish the group stage as the winners of Group A.
