Despite not having won a title, Senegal has one of the most competitive soccer players on the African continent.

Bamba Dieng – Centre Forward – Olympique Marseille 

Dieng rose from being a top scorer in the Senegal National Championship to being an Africa Cup of Nations winner in two years.
 
He began his career with Diambars in the Senegal League and had 12 goals in his first 14 games in his debut season. Dieng finished as the top scorer in the Senegal Premier League for the 2019–20 season.
 
Dieng signed for Marseille on October 5, 2020, on an initial loan deal and made a permanent switch in July 2021 after impressing in the short spell.
 
On 10 February 2021, the 22-year-old made his debut for the club. With a 2-0 Coupe de France win against Auxerre, he scored in the 92nd minute. Dieng featured for Marseille in the 2021-22 campaign. He scored 7 goals and provided three assists in 25 games in the French Ligue 1. He scored once in 4 appearances to help Marseille reach the semi-finals of the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League
 
Dieng had his Senegal senior debut in a World Cup qualification 4-1 win over Namibia on 9 October 2021. He got a call-up to the Senegal squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. He scored his first goal for the side in a 2-0 round of 16 victories over Cape Verde.
 
In the final against Egypt, Dieng scored in the penalty shootout to help Senegal become the champions of the tournament. He will almost certainly make the final World Cup squad in Qatar.

Pape Alassane Gueye – Defensive Midfielder – Olympique Marseille 

Born and bred in France, Gueye represented the European country at the U18 and U19 levels. However, he decided to switch allegiance to represent Senegal at the senior level.
 
Gueye made his maiden appearance with the Senegal national team in a World Cup qualification win over Congo on 14 November 2021. He went ahead to feature in two other qualifying matches.
 
The 23-year-old has since become a key member of the Teranga Lions. Gueye contributed hugely to Senegal’s success at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, where he played six games.
 
His pairing with PSG’s Gueye for Senegal at the World Cup would be a huge benefit for West Africa. Gueye joined Marseille in June 2020 on a free transfer after leaving Le Havre. He walked straight into the Marseille starting lineup. Gueye made 39 appearances and scored two goals in all competitions in the 2020-21 season. He had an outstanding campaign in the 2021-22 season. There he played 42 matches across the Ligue 1, Europa League, Europa Conference League, and Coupe de France competitions. He managed to score a goal and two assists in the process. Gueye is being scouted by Arsenal and other top European clubs.

Ismaila Sarr – Right Winger – Watford FC 

At 18 years, Sarr had already marked his senior debut for Senegal against Tunisia on January 15, 2017, in the Africa Cup of Nations held in Gabon.
 
He played two games before the Teranga Lions exited in the quarter-finals. Before then, he had received four invitations indicating how huge a prospect he was at the time. Sarr has totaled 39 caps since his debut and has scored 9 goals.
 
The talented footballer made the cut in Aliou Cisse’s squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he featured in all group stage games.  Despite carrying an injury, Sarr got involved in the squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
 
The 24-year-old recovered to make an appearance from the quarter-finals through to the finals when they won the tournament. He scored once and assisted once in the three games he played.
 
Sarr’s rise to fame was so fast because he joined FC Metz from the local club Generation Foot in July 2016. After just a season, he moved to Stade Rennes for €17 million.
 
After two seasons in Rennes, he moved to Watford in August 2019 for €30 million and has since been an important player on the English side. In the just-ended season, Sarr was among the best players on the team. He had 5 goals and two assists in 22 games in the Premier League. He scored 19 goals and provided four assists in 39 matches. Thus, Watford gained promotion back to the English top-flight from the Championship in the 2020-21 season.

Krepin Diatta – Winger – AS Monaco 

Diatta excelled in the U20 Africa Cup of Nations, where Senegal finished as runners-up, and in the World Cup in South Korea in 2017. He was one of four young Senegalese players to receive a debut call-up to the senior team in March 2019. He made his debut for the Teranga Lions in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar.
 
Diatta played in the final squad for the main tournament in Egypt and got named the best young player in the end after scoring one goal in 7 appearances. Senegal was runners-up in the tournament, losing to Algeria in the final. The 23-year-old has since been a starter for Aliou Cisse’s team. He could not play in Senegal’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations victory in Cameroon. Diatta might return before the 2022-23 season begins in August. He will be back on the Senegal team for this year’s World Cup in Qatar.
 
He is an important player to Cisse. Monaco outbid English Premier League rivals to recruit the teenager from Belgian Club Brugge in January 2021 for a cost close to €17 million. He played 13 matches and found the back of the net twice in all competitions for Monaco before his injury in November 2022.

Pape Matarr Sarr – Midfielder – Tottenham Hotspur 

The teenager is in contention for a place in Aliou Cisse’s Senegal squad for this year’s Mundial in Qatar for his great potential. He made his senior debut just last year during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Congo.
 
Sarr’s fast growth caught the attention of the Senegal head coach after a devastating first spell in the French Ligue 1 in the 2020-21 season. There he played 22 matches.  The 19-year-old midfielder joined Metz for local side Generation Foot in September 2020.
 
He moved to Tottenham after only a season for a deal worth around €17 million. Sarr was loaned back to Metz for another season in the French elite division before he joined the Premier League side Sarr had a fantastic spell for Metz in the just-concluded season, where he featured 33 times, scoring one goal and setting up three others.
 
The youngster got involved in the World Cup qualifications after playing against Togo and Congo.
 
Sarr was also a member of the Senegal team that won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. He played 12 minutes in the semi-final 3-1 win over Burkina Faso.
