Ghana’s male senior national team, the Black Stars, may have had a disastrous start to 2022 following a shambolic performance at the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations tournament, but the team sure will bring some excitement to the country before the year comes to an end.
In March, the Black Stars started making amends when a team coached by Otto Addo overcame rivals Nigeria to secure qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana’s national team has plenty of time to assemble a good group for a tournament scheduled in November-December.

Pitted in a Group H, tagged as a group of death, it will take some doing for the Black Stars to progress to the knockout stage of the tournament.

However, with a lot of promising players drafted into the national team in the last few months, there is hope for the African giants.

In this article, we take a look at five of the most promising players who could be the difference for the new Black Stars team.

Joseph Wolacott

Current club: Swindon Town

Position: Goalkeeper

Age: 25

Joseph Wollacott has gradually managed to win the hearts of a lot of Ghanaians with his performances in key games.

He was the first-choice goalkeeper for the Black Stars at the 2021 AFCON staged in Cameroon from January to February.

At the tournament, he was in post in all three matches as the Black Stars poorly crashed out at the group stage, having failed to win a single game.

Particularly in the final group game against Comoros, Joseph Wollacott was not convincing as he shipped in three goals. many people claimed that a goalie from English League Two had no place in the national squad.

Fortunately, Joseph Wollacott stayed when Coach Otto Addo took over from sacked Serbian gaffer Milovan Rajevac. He was called to assist Ghana in their playoff tie for the World Cup qualifiers. The goalkeeper was important as the Black Stars qualified for the Qatar tournament thanks to stunning saves during the games.

Now in the good books and a regular squad member of the national team, Joseph Wollacott has displayed a lot of promise, and if he continues to develop to reach his potential, that starting role will be cemented for the world cup.

In the 2021/22 football season, the goalie made 37 appearances for Swindon Town, where he provided one assist while keeping 10 clean sheets.

The top displays earned him the goalkeeper of the season in the EFL League Two.

Felix Afena-Gyan

Current club: AS Roma

Position: Forward

Age: 19

A true prodigy billed to become a world star soon if he can keep his head down and continue working. His name Felix Afena-Gyan already commands a lot of responsibilities after comparison to Ghana’s great Asamoah Gyan.

Can he live up to the hype he has enjoyed in the past year? Only time will tell, but certainly, a lot of Ghanaians think so.

Last year, the forward was playing in inter-schools games in Ghana. Never did he think he would be playing top-flight football for one of Italy’s top clubs this season.

But thanks to his humbleness and the talent he possesses, Felix Afena-Gyan has worked his way up from the youth team of AS Roma and is now part of the first team.

His incredible growth under Jose Mourinho is already attracting interest, with a summer transfer window move on the cards.

With 22 appearances in the 2021/22 football season, the attacker finished the campaign with eight goals.

Felix Afena-Gyan was a member of the AS Roma team. The team defeated Feyenoord in the finals of the first Uefa Conference League on May 25, 2022, to win the title.

The youngster is one to watch after being the primary center-forward for Coach Otto Addo during the playoffs against Nigeria.

He will have his chance not only in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers but also at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku

Current club: Sporting CP

Position: Attacker

Age: 18

With a cracking left foot, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku announced himself to the world when he starred for the Ghana U20 team at the CAF U20 AFCON in 2021.

At the tournament, the talented teenager played above his weight. His performance attracted interest from top clubs in Europe, including Liverpool.

After helping Ghana to become champions of the U20 AFCON, he finished the tournament as the best player.

Since then, he has been a regular in the Black Stars and was a member of the team that featured at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.

While he is yet to command a place in the starting eleven, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku has given every indication that he is amongst the promising players to watch out for in the future.

Just recently, he signed for the Portuguese club Sporting CP, where he will be playing for the first team in the 2022/23 football season.

For a left-footed attacker, the Ghana sensation ticks a lot of boxes with his quality, requiring just a few polishing to reach his potential to become a world star.

Definitely, one to look forward to seeing excel at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Mohammed Kudus

Current club: Ajax

Position: Attacking midfielder

Age: 21

Even at his young age, Mohammed Kudus is already a poster boy for the Ghana national team.

It is no secret that when he is absent from the national team, it becomes almost impossible to find a player that performs his duties to his standard.

Yes, he may have had a difficult time at Ajax in the last two seasons due to injury problems. However, it is a fact that when fit, Mohammed Kudus starts in any team on any day.

Combining his campaign in the Ajax and Jong Ajax team in the 2021/22 football season, the attacking midfielder scored six goals and provided one assist after playing in 21 matches.

He missed the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon but returned to the team in March to inspire the qualification to the FIFA World Cup.

The former FC Nordsjaelland wizard needs no introduction and certainly will be the main man for Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

His only standing block is whether he can stay fit. If he can bypass that setback, the talented player will be one to watch not only in Group H at the world cup but at the entire tournament.

Daniel-Kofi Kyereh

Current club: FC St. Pauli

Position: Attacking midfielder

Age: 26

Tagged the new ‘fine boy’ of the Black Stars, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh’s displays at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon earned him the trust of Ghanaians even when the national team exited at the group stage to the frustration of everyone.

In the last two group games, especially in the Comoros match, the forward was one of the bright candles in the team that inspired positivity in a bid to save Ghana from a disgraceful elimination.

Although he has since that time also had injury setbacks, his display at the club level with FC St. Pauli has indicated that he will be integral for the Black Stars in at least the next few years.

In the recently ended football season in Germany, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh scored 12 goals for FC St. Pauli and assisted nine goals as well after making 29 appearances.

It is through his excellent displays that he is now wanted by Bundesliga clubs pushing to bolster their squads for the next football season.

He sure did not debut for the Ghana national team early, but he has proven that he has come to stay to help chart the new path of the Black Stars.

If one can be happy with the new Black Stars under Coach Otto Addo, players like Daniel-Kofi Kyereh in the mix provide additional hope for the future.

Certainly, he will be part of the Ghana squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

At the tournament, Ghana has been pitted in Group H to face the likes of Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea.
