Pep Guardiola sends a message to Kalvin Phillips over unused substitute role in Community Shield defeat
Phillips was left on bench when City faced the Reds and suffered a 3-1 defeat as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez scored for Jurgen Klopp’s side, while Julian Alvarez scored for Guardiola’s side.
The 26-year-old joined City during this summer transfer window from Leeds United.
Speaking on Phillips, Guardiola said: “”He has confidence, he can play, he’s ready. He arrived just two weeks [ago]. We have Rodri, Bernardo, Gundogan; they know [City’s style]. Step by step he will get it. He’s an incredibly nice person. He is going to help us.”
