Luke Shaw admits he understands why Erik ten Hag's started Tyrell Malacia ahead of him

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has explained why he has agreed with Erik ten Hag’s decision to drop him for Tyrell Malacia.

Man United signed Malacia from Feyenoord last transfer window but the Netherlands international, who was described as Shaw’s understudy, has become a regular under Ten Hag.

The former Feyenoord defender has started United’s last four Premier League matches after replacing Luke Shaw at the left-back position, who endured horrid performances against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.

Erik ten Hag made a couple of changes to the lineup that succumbed heavily to the Bees and thereafter, Manchester United have won their last four league games with Shaw out of the starting lineup.

The England international has admitted that his performances in the games against Brighton and Brentford weren’t good enough and agreed that the Dutch tactician needed to make a couple of changes to ensure the team return in the right track.

And that has worked superbly in all competitions. Erik ten Hag has guided United to victories over Liverpool, Southampton, Leicester City and Arsenal using one starting lineup, with Malacia starting in all of them.

Against Sheriff Tiraspol, the Dutch left-back also started at the back and the Europa League clash ended in a comfortable 2-0 win of the Red Devils.

The 23-year-old doesn’t look like he’s getting off the team anytime soon, given the performances he put out in the previous games, and Shaw has suggested that he wouldn’t mind if Erik ten Hag continued to stick with the new signing.

“I think Ten Hag, the boss, he knows my qualities, he knows what I’m capable of and we’ve had chats,” Shaw told talkSPORT. “It’s understandable that, and I even agree, the start of the season wasn’t good enough and he had to make changes and I fully accept that, I accepted it.

“The only thing I can do is train hard and wait for my opportunities, whether that’s in the cup games or the Premier League, whatever I play in I just have to be ready and play at the standard I should be at.”

Manchester United are back in action this weekend when they face noisy neighbours Manchester City away from home on Sunday in the Premier League.

The last time both Manchester giants locked horns, Pep Guardiola came out victorious with a resounding 4-0 win over Ralf Rangnick’s side at the Etihad Stadium last season.

It will be the first Manchester derby for Erik ten Hag, who has won both games [Liverpool and Arsenal] he’s managed against two of the orthodox top-four sides this season.
