Erik Ten Haag poised to reignite pursuit of coveted midfield prospect
Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong during the upcoming summer transfer window.
According to sources at Sport, the Red Devils are targeting two major signings at the end of the season, with a new midfielder to complement Brazil international Casemiro believed to be a priority.
Casemiro, who joined United from Real Madrid last summer, has been a standout performer in the middle of the park for Erik ten Hag’s side. The 31-year-old has impressed with his inspired displays, including a goal in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United last Sunday and an assist in the FA Cup victory over West Ham United on Wednesday night.
With 34 appearances in all competitions, including five goals and five assists, Casemiro has been an integral part of United’s successful campaign so far, as they currently sit third in the Premier League table with 49 points from 24 matches played.
Ten Hag is said to be keen to find a new midfielder to partner Casemiro, and Manchester United’s interest in De Jong has reportedly been reignited. Although United agreed on a deal with Barcelona for the Netherlands international last summer, the move ultimately fell through.
However, according to sources, Ten Hag believes that De Jong’s ability to build up play from deep would make him the ideal player to fill the role alongside Casemiro. As such, Manchester United are believed to be considering making a move for the highly-rated midfielder in the summer.
