Dick's

On Feb. 28, DICK’s Sporting Goods released a statement addressing the Parkland school shootings that devastated the country on Feb. 14. The statement, like many others, sent out thoughts and prayers for the victims and their loved ones. But unlike many others, Dick’s Sporting Goods didn’t stop there.

“...thoughts and prayers are not enough,” DICK’s chairman and CEO Edward W. Stack said in the statement. “We have to help solve the problem that’s in front of us. Gun violence is an epidemic that’s taking the lives of too many people, including the brightest hope for the future of America — our kids.”

DICK’s Sporting Goods sold a shotgun to the Parkland shooter in November of 2017. While it was not the weapon of choice used in the Parkland shooting, DICK’s Sporting Goods recognizes that it very well could have been.

Starting on Feb. 28, DICK’s Sporting Goods will no longer be selling assault-style rifles (also referred to as modern sporting rifles). Although assault-style rifles had been removed from DICK’s stores after the Sandy Hook massacre, they will now be removed from all Field & Stream storefronts (a DICK’s Sporting Goods specialty retailer).

DICK’s Sporting Goods will no longer sell to anyone under 21 years of age and will no longer sell high capacity magazines. DICK’s also reiterates that it never has and never will sell bump stocks that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly.

Stack also urged elected officials to implement “common sense gun reform.”
