John Michael Kohler Arts Center appoints Faythe Levine assistant curator

The John Michael Kohler Arts Center announced the appointment of Faythe Levine as assistant curator for its Exhibitions Department. A documentary filmmaker, published author, owner and curator of three independent galleries, and founder/director of the Milwaukee-based Art vs. Craft maker’s fair, Levine brings a depth of experience to her new position.

A two-time winner of the Mary L. Nohl Fellowship, her made works and photography have been included in numerous exhibitions. Levine is perhaps best known for identifying a new trend—the rise of the DIY (Do It Yourself) movement, as exemplified in her film Handmade Nation. The New York Times dubbed Levine “The Ambassador of Handmade” in a 2008 article about her work.

Levine joins Curator Karen Patterson’s team at the Arts Center, and will assist in many areas including upcoming installations and the Arts Center’s internationally-renowned collection. Levine was recently a responder for the Folk & Fable: Levi Fischer Ames & Albert Zahn exhibition, part of a yearlong series, The Road Less Traveled, in which thought leaders from a variety of disciplines and artists from wide-ranging media and backgrounds were invited to share their responses to the work of 15 artist-environment builders from the Arts Center’s collection.

“Faythe brings such energy, insight, and dedication to all her projects,” said Patterson. “I am delighted to have her on board. Her collaborative spirit and strong ties to Wisconsin make it such a perfect match.”
