Human Rights Commission seeks nominations for 2017 HERO Awards
Nominations are due by Monday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. CT.
The Milwaukee County Human Rights Commission (MCHRC) announced a call for nominations for the 2017 Human Rights Commission “HERO Awards” recognizing students, individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions in organizing communities for justice.
“Our inaugural HERO awards will recognize organizations, students and individuals who have advanced the mission of human rights for all people in Milwaukee County,” said Jason Rae, chair of the Milwaukee County Human Rights Commission. “We encourage community members to submit nominations today for deserving individuals and organizations that are working to have a positive impact in Milwaukee County.”
With these awards, the MCHRC honors individuals and organizations who, through sustained advocacy and community organizing, advance social justice in Milwaukee’s diverse and multicultural communities. In addition, the MCHRC hopes to engage the County on the collective importance of recent civil rights successes and challenges in Milwaukee.
The awards will recognize honorees in three categories:
HERO Award for Organizations:
This award recognizes organizations and programs that, through community organizing and advocacy, secure, protect, and promote human rights for all people. Organizations and programs of all sizes, experiences, and levels of development will be considered.
HERO Award for Students:
This award honors Milwaukee’s young leaders. Outstanding grade school, middle school, high school, college or post-graduate level students will be honored for sharing their experiences and ideas on community organizing in Milwaukee.
HERO Award for Individuals:
This award recognizes individuals for their outstanding leadership in and contributions to organizing Milwaukee’s diverse communities for justice.
Nominations can be submitted online at tinyurl.com/MCHRCHEROAwards. Nominations are due by Monday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. CT.
Award recipients will be recognized on Dec. 10 at a ceremony recognizing International Human Rights Day.
“We look forward to honoring individuals and organizations from Milwaukee County for their contributions to building a more welcoming and just society,” Rae said.
