Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts pays tribute to Prince through textiles

The Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts has announced that it is first in line to host a traveling exhibit dedicated to celebrating the life and art of the late Minneapolis musician Prince.

Commemorating His Purple Reign: A Textural Tribute to Prince is produced and circulated by the Textile Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi was inspired to serve as juror and curator to the exhibit after Prince passed away in 2016, leaving behind a legacy of art.

“The quilts in Commemorating His Purple Reign: A Textural Tribute to Prince best represent the many and varied elements of creative ideas and techniques that have brought quilt making out of the sphere of functional domestic crafts to stand alongside the more universally recognized art forms, such as painting and sculpture as a valid means of artistic expression,” Mazloomi states in a press release. “The selected works were chosen based on strong composition, color and construction technique.”

In addition, the quilts had to speak to the life, spirit and music of Prince, Mazloomi adds.

Mazloomi has dedicated her career to bringing the contributions of African American quilt artists to the attention of national and international art communities.  The exhibition will feature the work of 25 quilters from across the nation, including members of the Women of Color Quilting Network.

The exhibit will run through June 17. The WMQFA is located at N50 W5050 Portland Rd., Cedarburg, WI.
