Bookmaker offers odds for Russia to be stripped from hosting World Cup
But don’t expect any good offer. The odds for Russia to host the tournament are very low – just 1.04. If the World Cup is held somewhere else, the bookie will give you a tenfold return.
The choice of Russia as host of the 2018 FIFA World Cup has been challenged. Some Western media raised questions of the discrimination against LGBT people in the country, as well as racism. Another reason is Russian annexation of Crimea and alleged military intervention in South Eastern Ukraine.
US senators Dan Coats and Mark Kirk wrote a joint letter to then FIFA president Sepp Blatter saying that the Kremlin should not only be stripped from host status, but also be banned from participating in the tournament. They said it should be done the same way when Yugoslavia was banned from Euro ’92 and the 1994 World Cup. The senators also proclaimed equivalence between Russia hosting the Cup with the 1936 Olympic Games in Nazi Germany. Blatter declined their request. “The World Cup has been given and voted to Russia and we are going forward with our work,” he said.
