Urban Ecology Center’s community supported agriculture event set for March

The Urban Ecology Center will host a local farmer open house on Mar. 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Riverside Park, 1500 E. Park Place in Milwaukee.

The event is a once-a-year opportunity to talk with local farmers, hear about their growing practices and learn their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscription options (local deliveries of boxes of farm-fresh produce and more).

“You’ll know that you’re helping to keep small family farms in business – farmers who use sustainable growing methods and produce high quality food,” said Anne Steinberg, an event organizer and long-time CSA member. “I enjoy a bounty of fresh, tasty, nutritious veggies, fruit and eggs in my CSA share, and I enjoy knowing the farmers and what is happening on the farm.”

The open house also includes free workshops:

CSA Basics – 11:30 a.m. or 1 p.m.

Jamie Ferschinger of the Urban Ecology Center will explain how CSA works and how to select the farm subscription that’s right for you. Learn how to start a Workplace CSA.

Cooking From Your CSA Box – 12 p.m. or 12:45 p.m.

Annie Wegner LeFort of the Mindful Palate will share how to efficiently use the contents of a weekly CSA box to prepare quick healthy meals. Recipes, tips and resources for cooking seasonally from scratch will be provided.

Lunch will be available for sale from MKE Localicious.
